My bet is on Safeway to survive! It'll be interesting to see what they'll turn the empty New Leaf Market building into in about 3 years. New Leaf get a clue-hire staff that is FRIENDLY and HELPFUL, get rid of the sour faced girls and petulant boys and lower your prices! You have to be in the $$$ to shop at your store. Safeway staff is GREAT and you could learn a few things from them. Safeway is also AFFORDABLE to the family and low income people.
But tofu is cheaper at New Leaf. Safeway will always be around.I do most of myshopping at Safeway but nutritional yeast and tofu are always bought at new leaf or staff of life.

What I don't like about New Leaf is that it always seems to need a good cleaning. I always feel like I need to wash after being in the store.

I welcome Whole Foods. I know it is expensive but I do like clean and I like a choice.

You need to try Descheutes Obsidian Stout, you can get it at the liquor store across from the westside safeway.

I've been shopping at westside New Leaf for over a decade. I don't go there often, maybe once a month, preferring Shopper's Corner for meat and produce (better quality).

I have noticed that the staff at New Leaf lately has been a little nicer and more pleasant. This is a welcome change. One of my chief complaints about New Leaf is attitude. Still not as pleasant as Shopper's but improving.

Safeway - I hate that store. The employees are fine, but it's dingy and dirty and not well-stocked - I imagine that's due to overuse. Looking forward to their expansion, and hoping that it solves the problems of the store.

Too bad Nob Hill didn't come to the westside. Shoppers is still my store of choice for food items, though. Can't really beat the quality or service!

This is obviously written by someone who does not budget for his food, toiletry and home supplies, nor does he need to plan for the various needs of a family. He doesn't plan for much of anything, but lives day-to-day, hand to mouth. Sort of like a caveman.

In the old days it would be about the product- availability, prices, and people,(customer service,) not politics, spending $7.00 for a jar of jam, and feeling hip. My favorite thing is when people buy "health food store diapers." They do not hold anything and so more resources are used up on extra laundry and they still take tens of thousands of years to decompose. But at least the customers feel more cool, more PC.
If either of these companies were really thinking they would offer both their existing products plus the products offered by the other store. More people would shop at New Leaf if they also had normal products at cheap prices like Safeway does. When you fall on hard times the Safeway two for one stuff can get you through.
That "two-fer" and "three-fer" game at Safeway is misleading, Old Timer. You need to be careful what you buy there. Safeway makes up the difference on those loss leaders by jacking up the prices on other stock items, mostly in the dry goods aisles in the middle of the store. Cleaning supplies and personal care items are consistently high, when not on special. "Fancy" brand foods are marked up absurdly -- the pasta I use is almost a dollar more per box at Safeway than it is at another market in town. But it is across the board. Fifty cents here, 80 cents there, and a dollar there, and soon the "You have saved $8.35" at the bottom of your Safeway receipt means nothing. I use Trader Joe's for a huge portion of my shopping these days. They don't play price games. They carry stuff if they can carry it for a good price, and they drop it if they can't.

I used to love Trader Joe's, but not so much anymore.

When I first started shopping there, to give you an idea of how long ago it was, I used to buy imported beer and cigarettes. Obviously, it was before they became known as a healthy choice type of store.

Even more recently, they seemed to have better prices - 10-15 years ago - on things than they do now. I'm pretty surprised at how much of the store is premade goods - and how many college kids I see there.(We couldn't afford premade dinners when I was college - I ate far too much top ramen and spaghetti back then to even like either much now).

Their produce doesn't impress me. Still have the best oatmeal cookies though.
