Years ago right out of college I worked in an independent laboratory which tested food products, and later I also worked for the Carnation company. All products had to undergo a microbiological screening before they could be sold, This was in the days before the concern over trans-fats and all that foofarah which dominates the area of nutritional concern that we now observe. Understand that fresh products like fruit and vegetables are harder to lab screen because they are in the distribution chain by necessity before the cultures can be grown and evaluated, that is an area where handling and growing conditions need to be stringently controlled.
In the area of processed foods though there is no excuse for these outbreaks if the proper testing is being done. We need to encourage the government to monitor the testing and make certain that no food is marketed before being cleared of biological contamination. Write your Senators and Congressman and make them aware of your concern.
