Quality Lapse in Refried Beans

Quality Lapse in Refried Beans

From my Northern California Safeway, I purchased three cans of Safeway-brand vegetarian refried beans for dinner tonight. They are a regular part of my diet, so I am familiar with the way they are supposed to look and taste.
To my surprise, when I opened the first can, the beans slooped out into the pan instead of remaining in a cylindrical brick as they normally do. When heated, the beans turned into a soupy mess about the consistency of Elmer's glue. Thinking this was an isolated occurrence, I opened a second can only to find the same thing. Has anyone else noticed a general watering-down of this particular product in the last few months?
Could it be a cost-saving measure? A factory error in my particular batch?

Yes! I just had the same experience. Of course my first thought was that there was something wrong with them, and I freaked out for a bit, but I'm glad I found your post. I ate about a half a can anyway (I too opened another can to see what was going on), and I really think the only difference is the consistancy. But it sucks! I guess this means I can't buy safeway beans anymore...:(
