Safeways lack to hire more cashiers means I have to deal with even more bitchy customers as usual. Unless they want me to commit suicide, they should treat us cashiers as human beings, not as robots.

safeway is a failure. they will be bought on soon the way steve burd runs things. whomever does take over the company will turn things around and make it much better. safeway is run by a total clown and he knows he has no clue what to do. the clown doesn't want to listen to the little people like us to make things better. just hang in there donna like i do. i hate the company more than anyone to ever hate anyone or anything. steve burd knows i can put his company into the ground at anytime.

I have worked at Safeway since late October. I do not get treated with respect by any of the managers. Nobody does. I work as a courtesy clerk and once in awhile as a cashier. I HATE IT. There was one time where I didn't know what a certain produce item was, so I turned around to ask just like I'm trained to do. The guy behind me happened to be one of the managers. He freaked out at me and basically started yelling saying that I should be looking this stuff up in the book we have at our checkstands.
I ask you, how am I suppose to look up the item if I don't know what it is? Even if I did know what it was, and was being lazy, you shouldn't be yelling at me for asking.
There was another time where there was about 30-60 minutes where I didn't time to do a lot of my regular courtesy clerk jobs because customers were askign me where stuff was in between me being called and doing errands for the cashiers. I finally got some breathing room, and dealt with the hand held baskets, and did a sweep of the store. I was going to go outside and do the carts. In order to do this, I had to get a jacket, because it was winter and freezing. As I was on my way to get a jacket that the store provides, the same manager is talking to the girl at customer service saying that she should be getting me to do the carts. He was basically having a tissy fit. He saw me going around gettign stuff for custmors. He heard my name beign paged on the intercom to do some jobs for the cashiers. he saw me doing the baskets and the sweep. So why couldn't he figure out that I wasn't able to do the carts? WHen I came to get the cart key, which is at customer service, the manager was gone. I explained to her that I literally wasn't able to go do the carts. She says, "I know. The manager is just being a dick."

I know for a fact that I'm not the only one who has problems with the management. And the two stories I just shared aren't the only ones I have.

im a cashier studying full time for electronics. for the most part my management is decent. except this one absolute asshole of an assistant manager. if u have watched "Employee of the Month" film, you will know the kind of person I am talking about. he talks all high and mighty with me and treats me like a 14 year old adolescent. incidentally, i happen to look about 15-16, but im 24.
his name is kerrick and most unfortunately, got a promotion for cutting hours and making himself look good by making cashiers face for him. i was once waiting for a customer to haul the basket to the conveyor belt, then he calls me on the phone and tells me im a lazy cashier and threatened to demote me to service clerk. La de da! I think I kept interfering with him when he was flirting with the other cashiers who were all females. because he was supposed to train me, i kept asking questions at very inconvieient times. He would standing right in front of this gorgeous Chinese cashier and making good progress in talking it up. then i would ask him right in the middle of a very smoothly orchestrated pick up line, "Hey, Kerrick, i think that customer paid with an unauthorized credit card." later it turned out the credit card was fine, but he was seriously unamused on both counts.

Yeah, I figured that out from stories from other employees I work with. They've told me stories similiar to the one I've told. I've never worked at Wal-mart, so I wouldn't know.

Dear Mr. Burd,
I don't know how much I spend a year at your store but if pressed to give a number, I would say it's around $5000. Now, I think that should buy me a certain amount of good will. Unfortunately it does not. Allow me to explain. I'm a middle aged man with grey at the temples, wrinkles around the eyes. I cannot or never will be mistaken for a teenager. Yet consistently I am pressed for my birthdate when I buy a bottle of wine or a sixpack of beer. The argument has been put to me that police are running a sting or that an internal audit is being enforced. Let me say again that I cannot or never will be mistaken for a teenager. When I asked again why the store insisted upon a correct, verifiable birthdate, I was told so that the store knew what to order and stock. This is again a feeble argument. Your own data would show what stock you have. My birthdate has nothing to do with your correct stock. It was later explained to me that the idea was to better track buying trends. Perhaps you have voodoo management skills at Safeway that can track trends customers don't know about. But I seriously doubt that. Buying trends are market driven. They aren't ideas that flow miraculously from the customer's subconscious. If you are looking for a trend, yes, there are people who buy alcohol. It is part of our culture. Perhaps the fact that you are an evangelical Christian has something to do with your harassment of your legally aged alcohol buying customer. Perhaps your link to the Bush administration and his serious anti-union stance and puritanical outlook have something connected to this. Maybe Safeway leaders don't really want to sell alcohol. If this is the case, please let me know. If Safeway is truly loathe to distribute alcohol in stores to adults who are legally allowed to purchase it without surrendering personal digital information, the maybe a sign in the wine/beer section would be appropriate. If, as I have been told, the digital information that is being entered into the system goes nowhere (something I also suspect as I am asked my birthdate at each purchase), then there is something seriously wrong with your database. To pay a programmer a small fee per to create the code would be simple. In fact, if you calculate the amount of time the teller must enter and reenter the birthdate time each day compared to sales, you will note that you are wasting time and efficiency, thus driving prices higher for your customer. Let me sum this up. Humans have been doing business transactions for thousands of years. The customer/client relationship is sacrosanct. Leave the old folks alone. And making your clerks hassle us, well, that's really shameful. They don't make the decisions. You do. Another thing, we middle aged folks buy the most. In fact, I am faced with a beautiful amount of options. There are stores where I can make my purchases just another block away. I don't want to do this of course. I like shopping in one place. But the culture you have created in your store makes it difficult. You are out of touch with your customer. And most likely you have serious problems in your management. If you don't feel the need to sell alcohol, get it off your shelves and take a loss in profits. In turn I will check my portfolio and make sure I am not represented in any way with Safeway. Please don't feel the need to call me or explain yourself. The last call I got was really rather pathetic.
Sincerely,
American Citizen

YOU SUCK! You are the ultimate panderers. Your produce all tastes the same.. and seriously how hard is it to sell a fresh tomato??? I picked up some cranberry juice the other day thinking it was Ocean Spray, but your cleverly disguised container tricked me (good job!) and your's tastes like crap compared to OS! Tonight I bought a "roasted" chicken... It was so full of salt I had to throw it away.. plus it had some sort of slimy crap stuck inside the meat??? Really??? How can you mess up cooking a chicken????? Also, you should try one of your pies sometime... One of those delicious "home made" pies you sell. The Hostess pies I used to buy in High School are better.. You are a PERFECT example of what's wrong with our country these days... it's called greed. You are greedy panderers.. Congratulations! You should be proud.

You know what? Just because we have a job doesn't mean we have to like it, and if we choose to bitch about it, we have that right. Especially when dumbass customers like you come in all violent and shit, wanting to punch the cashiers. You probably saw them on one of the few breaks they actually get, you don't work there so you can't say a thing. Go fornicate yourself dipshit.

Why doesn't Steve Burd listen? Unless you are his class of money, you are no one. An example of his glaring self indulgence --- he own a house in Lake Tahoe, His wife didn't like the view, so he bought the house next door and tore it down. He earned over $69 million last year in bonuses earned on the backs of the poor. Some older employees do well. However the new clerks are sweat shop labor. He is trying to be the Walmart of the grocery retail. He will succeed. If he read "Scrooge" he would believe himself to be the happy ghost of Christmas --- oh Farley, er Burd, your life is yet to be judged.

Slaveway hires young cocky Managers, who do not have a clue on what they are doing, they talk to there senior employees who have more experience in running a store and dealing with customers like they are stupid when they should really learn from them. Oh and they constantly screw up there pay and then blame it on payroll... Then try to get someone from the main office to help thats another story what a joke this company is I feel sorry for the employees that are left to suffer.

Donna you are 100% correct when you say safeway treats the employees like robots. You are also correct when you say they need to hire more people. They work you to death and the more you try to do for them the more they expect.
When I started working for safeway over 37 years ago it was a great place to work. They treated the employees with dignity and respect. They paid well and the benefits were great. Then Steve Burd took the reins. That is when safeway started going down the toilet!! Every year it gets worse and worse. Safeway treats the employees very badly and keeps taking more and more benefits away and paying less and less, while the Burd man and his cronies get bigger and fatter bonuses and raises. I worked in the stores and also worked at the "so called help desk" for safeway and believe me working at the helpdesk was even more awful than working in the store. You wouldn't believe some of the rules they impose on the helpdesk employees.
My advice is, if at all possible, get the heck out of safeway before it either kills you or you go totally insane!!!

Don't you remember that teenager that posed as an old man and got on an airplane? If you aren't hiding anything, then comply to be sure no one gets in trouble and be done with it. Are you afraid of something? Waht exactly are you hiding????? I mean, seriously. This is America, but look around you. EVERYONE has to cover their ass no matter what or they will get sued. Even the grocery stores. It's not like they are refusing to sell you anything. You are actually really rather pathetic.
