I haul out of PMT, Sealand, NIT, and NNMT, Inland container yard, BMT, and a half a dozen other ports on the East Coast and I very rarely have had an issue with the longshoreman, most will give you the same respect back as you give them. in the last 10 years I've only had to file a grievance on 3 longshoreman and 1 of them ended up losing his job one was transfered to a much more suited job(trash pickup) and one was written up. I have had more issues with other drivers then port workers.

it is amazing to see how much misunderstanding there is from all you guys, first yes the long shoreman spit and hate owner operators in the ports on the west coast, you guys on the east coast for what I have read here do not know or understand and have any idea what is going on here on the west coast, I know must of you guys are proud real independent contractors but reality is that along the whole west coast there is an open exploitacion of port drivers by this corrupted system where the so call trucking company only needs a fax, computer, small room space, phone and a jerk dispatcher to call himself a trucking company and the port driver pays for truck, diesel, insurance, maintenance, parts, mechanic, tireman, phone, road tax, and a bunch of other expenses wich you all know (no need to tell you) wiht the difference that this poor individual will not negotiate a rate for that load but rather is imposed what the owner of the company says, see this companies act and work like the mafia, they all pay the same, they all treat you the same....... so you see I hope to give you an idea what the fight is all about, do not be unconcious and understand the issues (most of these drivers are immigrants from all over latin-america, some know english, some do not, some understand what is needed but they have been fighting with these bussiness mafia style for almost 30 years) so please do not critizise what you do not understan or comprehend because in reallity maybe you are real independent contractors but these particular individuals are not.... and do not stand there and say that the longshore man are cool with the drivers in the ports please that is and understatement by any of you guys do not say that is not true not at least on the west coast.... I respect your opinion but do not tell lies or say something that is not true, I am a proud teamster making a good living with a secure retirement thank god! and I will not have it any other way respect my views because I respect yours...... keep on trucking...teamsters.....

I'm happy you are Teamsters but that was your decision to make. My decision as well as that of many other truckers is to remain a lease/operator not a company employee behind the wheel of a company truck. The problem here is that your Teamster leadership wants to make that decision for thousands of truckers who haul freight at the ports on both coast. I read where they didn't get the employee mandate decision they wanted in LA so now their coalition allies head to Congress to persuade legislators to change nationwide transportation law at the ports. Don't you think they should ask the very drivers this drastic action will effect before they proceed with this devastating plan to ban us from hauling at port terminals? No, it seems your Teamster leadership has decided on their own what's best for us. It's actually what's best for them! I don't appreciate any group taking away my right to make a decision effecting my livelihood. This is America not some communist country where the government takes away private property from it's citizens. I don't think this Teamster plan is going to sit well with any truckers once the majority find out what is truly going on here. What amazes me is several of your locals have owner/drivers who are union members in other divisions but your leadership still chose to take away our right at the ports to remain that way. Your organizers came here to the east talking a much different story a while back so what changed? They told us they wanted to help us remain owner/drivers but we could also become union members with a hauling contract. I have no faith in your leadership ever telling the truth again. Sorry but I don't want anything to do with your union.

is all the same person, and probably not even a teamster, just a troll looking for attn. then again it is just like a teamster to try personnel attacks on people when the teamsters realize their position is a losing one.

Itís difficult for me to understand why any driver would be willing to give up his freedom to purchase his own truck. There seems to be something wrong with this picture. That is clearly an individual choice to make. I work the ports short haul every day. I donít hear other truckers happy with this situation the Teamsters have created. In fact I hear the opposite. The more drivers find out about this move to ban us from the terminals the angrier they are with the Teamsters union. This is a disgusting misuse of an environmental issue to benefit the unions goal of unionizing every trucker hauling at the ports. I hope the Teamsters fail miserably in this endeavor to destroy our right of truck ownership.

I see nothing has changed. the teamsters are back trying to drum up support from unsuspecting drivers who don't realize that the union wants to replace the owner/operator trucker with company drivers at the port. it doesn't stop there because once they start with the clean port truck regulation baloney they'll run off all the trucks from the rail & port which are not up to the stringent epa standards. this means flatbed, lowboy, dumps, as well as the container haulers they are trying to organize into their union membership. while all in the name of clean air the true agenda is about new dues paying members in an all employee workforce using the Obama army to get what they want. socialized trucking means no more small business truckers in the end. goodbye owner/operator if they succeed in this evil plan.

Well guys the Teamsters are up to their old tricks again. This time they're trying to do same thing in Savannah,Ga as in California. Run off the owner/operator trucker by using the environmental groups to ask their legislators to ban older model trucks under stricter pollution laws. yeah like we need more BS government regulation in our lives!! Goodbye independent truckers in south georgia & south carolina unless you wake up!
Sadly a few truckers here still think the union is going to help them with rates & legal issues against the crooked intermodal companies but it'll amount to being just the opposite. The union cares about more members, which amounts to more dues & the fastest way to accomplish that is to run off the owner/operator trucker & replace him/her with drivers on company owned vehicles who can then legally ask for union representation. WOW, it really SUCKS what the Teamsters leadership has turned into with their candy-a$$ back door clean truck campaign. The only hope for the owner/operator is to ban together & fight this outrage against freedom of ownership. savannah drivers speak out, www.porttrucker.com
