When Yucaipa purchased R.I. based Almacs Supermarkets in 1987, it was the beginning of the end. Buyout after buyout after buyout bled everything from a once leading chain in the R.I.- So. Mass. area. It would be a sin if they were allowed to come back into the area and purchase Shaw's and bleed them in the same way!!!!

I agree with REMEMber ALMACS. I worked for ALMACS for 35 years and was a store manager for 28 years. Mr. Pike ;had started the company in the early 50's when he and his partner started with 1 store and grew the company to 44 stores which was the number one chain in R,I, and southeastern Ma. When Mr. Pike got into his 70's he looked to retire and wanted to pass the company on down to his son and daughter they did not want it. Mr. Pike did not want to close down the company as it employed close to 4'000 people; so he contacted Joe Berkle who owned several chains in Ca. Berkle came east bought the company; closed the warehouses; closing the stores one by one until we only had 20 or so stores left. After keeping the company for only 2 years he sold it to Leonard Green and associates from Ca. and they kept the company for only 2 years and then sold it to Great American/victory stores out of Utica N.Y. who closed the company after only 9 months. My point is ; if Yucaipa which is run by Ron Burcle the son of Joe Burkle buys SHAWS for which I worked for 14 years; the same thing is going to happen. These people are BRUTEL. I am afraid the same is going to happen. Stores in the east cannot be run like the stores in the west.
