This information would be much more useful if it were presented in a table, so hospitals could be compared to each other and compared to the average values on LI, NY, and the USA. As it is presented here, it looks like one long list and takes a long time to read. I hope Newsday improves this and reposts the story on-line.

It's not suprising that North Shore-LIJ did so poorly. This avaricious behemoth is a nightmare for patients. Ever been a patient there? It's clear that the motive is PROFIT, not patients! Their near monopoly on health care on Long Island must be stopped!!

This is a lot of talk to answer a very easy question. Illegals overcrowding hospitals withou insurance are killing are local hospitals. Let's not even talk about the schools.

I agree with you 100%-several very dear people to me passed away in that hospital due to infection which they got at the hospital. The hospital is very dirty, some nurses are caring but, most, do not give a dam. They stand around especially at night when family members leave and just talk. If you ask them a question, they say I will be there soon, have patience. When your family is in alot of pain, you do not have patience for nurses standing around talking about a movie or what that had for dinner.

St. Francis Hospital is horrible! They have doctors that do procedures that are supposed to be 100% effective but turn out to be 0% effective. They charge you for a semi-private room when you're stuck in the emergency or auxillary wards. I would never go back there!

What a surprise, LIers are unhappy with hospitals. What a shock. This is sure to lock up Ridgely Oakes pulitzer.

Eastern Long Island Hosp is #1. What a joke, if a patient has anything more serious then a splinter, they ship them out.

You're so right! St. Francis will perform procedures that are unnecessary just to get the money!

Are we now rating hospitals like hotel resorts? Maybe some genious will start the new web craze: "Hospitals.com ", complete with pictures, virtual tours and survey scores. What patient is going to be "satisfied" with any hospitalization? Yet another ploy for the insurance companies and the US government to lower reimbursements based upon subjective, useless data.

the last thing you want to hear is "we have to take you to the hospital".
I'd rather have them say "we have to take you to a vet" - I'd feel safer & better taken-care-of

Had surgery at NS years ago and it was a nightmare. IV started in busy hallway and then surgery started while I was in a state of "awareness" which was hush, hush in those days (1990). GYN said I was imaging things! Private duty nurses all foreign and nasty, staff nurses nice.

The hospital is a horrible place for sick people. If you have a family member in the hospital, you need to take a leave of absence from your job and devote yourself to being their advocate.

There is no continuity of care, doctors drop in (and bill), but provide no useful treatment, many over-worked nurses sedate the crap out of some patients so they don't have to be bothered.

Folks - be sure to get a healthcare proxy so that you can help give your loved one the care they need (or so they can give it to you!). If you don't have the proxy, the hospital staff will use it as a way to avoid keeping you informed (and possibly doing their job).

Get in the doctors face and get answers! If you don't like what you hear - Get a Second Opinion!!!

My father-in-law just spent a month in the hospital. Ten days in the "doctor" told my wife that she should be prepared to have a stomach tube inserted and to send him to a nursing home. Well my wife was there every day and thanks to her my father-in-law is in a sub-accute rehab and doing much better.

If you think the Doctor is a JERK - get another doctor. If you think the nurse - sucks - DEMAND another nurse. Don't just sit there and take it - you must be pro-active at all times or your loved ones will suffer!!!

Complain, complain, complain... They're just asking the wrong people. Why not poll the families from third world countries whose kids are being taken in by these very hospitals to repair birth defects for free? I bet they'd have a different story.

They don't call Brookhaven Memorial Hospital "Bury Me Here" for no reason. I took my husband there when he had orbital cellulitis (an infection behind the eye which can lead to an infection of the brain)- THEY TOLD HIM HE HAD CONJUNCTIVITIS, gave him medication for that and a stronger pain killer. He went to his doctor who admitted him to North Shore immediately. Unless I am dead in the ambulance - I wouldn't let them take me to BMH no matter what the circumstance!

Keep in mind that most Long Islanders are a bunch of Me ME ME type people and would complain about anything. They do not know the phrase " Slightly inconvienenced"
So you can't put too much Stock in their whining
