What a joke. The Safety equipment required is silly for Inland Waters like the Long Island Sound and Great South Bay.
To make it worse, some of the equipment is Dated.
It must be replaced after a few years even though they function perfectly. The Marine store Hose you on the price because they know this. Very sad indeed.
Just another Revenew maker that is labeled "for the safety of...."
How naive can you get, we've been boating on LI Sound for over 20 years & have run into some VERY rough seas leaving Mattituck Inlet. You've got to be beyond stupid to think ypu don't need safety equipment, ie life jackets, radio, flares etc. Remember LI Sound (& South Bay as well) are still big bodies of water. It's ridiculous to think you can outwit Mother Nature when you're on the water.

when some drunk rams you & they drag your dead body from the water do you think your surviving family members will agree that these stops are wrong???proactive trumps reactive when possible injury/death are the reason!!

I was stopped once this year (random), and once last summer (also random). Guess what? I had the required number of PFD's, my safety equipment is up-to-date and in working order, and I had all of my required paperwork. I was also not drunk. Guess what? No tickets.

Do the right thing, and you'll be fine. These inspections are conducted for good reason.

So being responsible and not a moron keeps you out of trouble. Outstanding analysis and observation.
I used to make it a point to get the courtesy inspections at the beginning of the season just to make sure. Simple things save lives.
Those who hate the inspections are those who fear the inspections, and those are the people who have no business on the water.
