Yes, a friend of mine who works for Seagate in SV said they cut close to 25% of the work force there today. So sad. Best of luck to all of you.

Jobs in the private sector are not a matter of public record.

I understand that they are not a matter of public record.
I don't have a problem with them releasing the salary but also connecting the identity of the person to the salary, that's where I think it starts to cross the line. I now know what my neighbor makes, but he will never have an idea as to what I make, understand the problem here? Some people are banging their hands on the table, saying, "I Demand to know what the public officials get paid" yet at the same time when asked for their salary information, "No way would I ever tell you that or do I have to".....
and for the record, I work in the private sector....
I do not get it

This company was the premiere drivemaker, no? Was it a Madoffian farce? Or are the suits just superbuffoons? If the company was a top five drive maker, the demand for storage continues to skyrocket, how did they screw up so bad? Is this the state of US business acumen?

The truth is they are going to mexico, thailand, and other country to have work done for cheaper labor and no union! I went to Mexico this past winter and they had Sears, J.C. Penny, GMC, Fords, Toyato, and all those Burgers Companies saling their business there and worker at a cheaper rate. Let get together and not buy their stuff here and see what becomes of their so call cheaper wage!

English as a second language much?(Not meant in a derogatory manner - just think that phrase sounds funny. I wish I had a second language.)

Anyway - Fuck Seagate and their agenda of hate. Anyone who works there should have left long ago when their former CFO gave a reported 60K to the Yes On H8 campaign.

Wait until some of you people losing your jobs end-up in one of the homeless shelters; you are going to be in for the shock of your life! You'll automatically be labeled mentally ill & alcoholic/addicted just walking through the doors, what you're not mental or addicted? DENIAL!

They have done this before......laid off bunches of people and then hired them back. This is not a place where I would want to work.

California is not business friendly nor is Santa Cruz. I am surprised this company is still in town.

What do you mean 'they are going? The migration started 26 years ago!!! That is when they started sending the sub assemblies to Singapore. I was laid off twice from there. the last time was 1995 and I'm happy to say I have not been back.

It's not a local story anymore... there might be all of ten people who dust the offices out @ Scotts Valley and one security guard.
Then there was the (In)famous ST-225, installed in huge numbers in IBM XTs (8088 and later, 286 vintage) that needed the computer slapped on the side like an old TV who's vertical oscillator had gone out of sync, just to get the sticktion of the motor bearings broken to allow the drive to spin up and boot the computer.
I thought that was the ST 251 which was the first drive with silver oxide media (discs) which had a smoother surface than the old iron oxide media which made it more difficult to lift the R/W heads on power up...

You know how weird it gets at Seagate? They moved Accounts Receivable to Thailand when I was there. AR. I think they outsourced some other admin functions to Buenos Aires.

Talked to a guy in HR there a couple of years back, asked him, "Does this really make sense? Move your HQ functions to ANOTHER CONTINENT?"

His answer: it's not logic, it's religion. Outsourcing or moving functions overseas is a religion there. Doesn't have to make sense.

Seagate has long held a bad reputation for how they treat their employees. The nick name slave gate was not some silly misrepresentation. When I was there the saddest thing to me was the cowardice of the employees. They would not stand up to the bullies. I was laid off for speaking my mind while I was doing excellent work for a salary that was lower than it should have been. The best day of my life was when they told me to go away. I didn't realize just how awful it was until I worked elsewhere. Lay offs frequently don't cut out dead wood and streamline the process. They more often result in dumping more work on those willing to do it as middle management sits in closed offices playing solitaire on their computers all day. What a farce!
