Its great that we pick up the trash, but we then have to put it somewhere. No more room in the landfill. Time to start thinking about some sort of waste to energy plant.

Don't they already have a waste to energy plant designed and in the works for Big Island?

Could anyone provide a pound for pound brakedown on the masses of each type of item?

I think we could agree that a car battery, 200 pound fishing net, or 55 gallon drum is not in the same catagory as a bubble gum wrapper.

Give this person a cigar.

A cig but weighs 1 to 2grams or 0.0022 to 0.0044pounds. If all those 71,000 items were buts they would weigh between 150 to 300lbs.
By weight the smoking related detrius was 0.7 to 1.4% of the debris....
Nowhere near as impressive as 'about half' or 'leading the list'.

Or look at it this way...
A but is about 1 to 2mL. One can can hold 175 to 350 buts. A 2L pop bottle 1000 to 2000.
How many would fit in a car battery, 3000, 5000?
OTOH a car battery contains @ 22lbs of LEAD!!
