Satyam to axe 4,500 employees

Satyam Computers, which has just started giving pink slips to its employees, could potentially downsize its workforce by a whopping 4,500 employees.

This translates to a little less than 9% of the 51,000 employees that the company employs. Company sources say 1,500 employees have been put under the performance improvement plan (PIP), euphemism for employees put on watch list and asked to shape up or ship out. Apart from this, 3,000 others have not been given any increment in the last appraisal cycle, thereby indicating that their services are dispensable.

"This 1,500 plus 3,000 equals 4,500, which indicates the total number of persons who could be eased out of the company," the source said.

On Friday, all employees received an e-mail from the company chief Ramalinga Raju warning them, especially the ones on the bench, to not bunk office and be in their best dress code, failing which they may face strict disciplinary action.

Last week, some 400 employees from across different locations were given the pink slip. Sources also indicated that after getting the message many among the 3,000 have also started leaving jobs. But an estimate of the employees who have left is not known.

A Satyam spokesperson said: "The bottom 5% of those who have got a bad appraisal are put under PIP and given dummy projects to prove themselves. If they fail they will be shown the door. But some of them marked for PIP said they have been given very little time to come up as winners." However, even as it downsizes, Satyam continues to hire new employees in thousands. Over 40% of them are fresh blood just passing out of college.

The spectre of retrenchment is creating panic among employees of the company. "Of the 12 people working in my project, five were suddenly asked to resign, failing which, the company warned, it would fire us. Everything came without warning," said a techie pleading anonymity.

now its the time to trust company, I dont think that the management will ditch the employees. there should be some reason which they cant able to expose as it might impact the business.

2 years back the average appraisal rate was 30%, all of my freinds who are in TCS,INFOSYS,WIPRO got very less. for TCS there is no increment at all.

So there should be some reason to delay this even for update the status on this.

I too like you people, frustrated a lot due to this,But i look into the situation from other side , I think that i am doing wrong on posting my meesages in this board which is violating the company policy.
Now onwards if i dont like the company policies then i will resign and join in another company after discuss with my RM.(I wont talk to my HR beore my resignation as I strongly feel that they are useless, becuase they are unable to tackle the situation and dont understand the feelings of 50000 employees)
I will trust my company and will wait till they release the appraisal.

No mails on appraisal....any information friends ?? hopefully they ll send out a mail that there is a unavoidable delay hence appraisal letters will be caught in Oct 08 pay check payable in Nov 08 :-(

I can understand that Satyam is facing really some genuine reason for which our appraisals are on hold. But why they are cuttng down part of variable pay which atleast we should get. Above that once they are publishing that it will be deposited on 15th and in the next moment they are removing the news completely from Webpay.

It is my sincere request to the upper management that please..please do not do this as it hits our emothions to maximum extent.....

We are proud to be a satyamite and will always be there with the company during it's sudden crisis, but they atleast should not hit us like this. My sincere apeal to our HR and Finance team is to let us know exactly when our Variable pay would be given.

Well, people let's stop this forum..as this forum is also creating a sense of inhumanness among ourselves and also acts as a fuel to ignite our anger which further hitting our emotions there by losing our faith and loyality towards Satyam.

Some people may not like my post...so to them my sincere apologies if some how someone has been hurt.....
