Sandisk Memory Card 1gb formatted into 4gb?

I bought a new camera today (Sealife Ecoshot). I then bought a 1GB Sandisk SD card from OfficeMax. I took it home, put it into the camera(quality set at 2816x2112 and Fine, which is the highest). The camera showed 301 pictures left, which are the specs for a 1gb card and that quality. I then formatted the card with the camera, and now it shows that there are 1232 pictures left, and when it is hooked up to the computer it shows the capacity of the removable drive(actually the camera) as 3.86GB. It is taking pictures fine, they are about 2.5mb each so its on the course to accurately be about 4gb.
Anyone know why this happened?
