W. didn't want to fix Social Security, he wanted to privatize it. He wanted to dump trillions of tax payer dollars into the coffers of investment bankers so they could gamble it away as they did the rest of our money. He had a Republican Congress so what stopped him? The fact that the American people overwhelmingly disagreed with what he wanted to do is what stopped him. Politicians do have to do things according to what the voters want, right or wrong. Some districts are conservative and some liberal and their elected representatives should reflect that situation. Doing "what is right rather than what will get them re-elected." as Mr. Hoppe suggests might sound good but it all rests on what each individual thinks is right. I think our government ought to be leading the way into a sustainable future with tax breaks for green industries, etc. Sen. McConnell probably disagrees with me but more importantly his constituency probably disagrees with me and that's the way he should lean.
I'd say the biggest problem we have in governing ourselves is the need for the media to fill 24 hours each day, usually accomplished with invented controversy and the fact that most Americans are pretty darned lazy when it comes to taking part in governing ourselves.
