There is nothing worse than an armchair expert that tries to place a multi-generational creative icon like Bob Dylan in a convenient shoebox,to take down off the shelf yr. after yr. and play with...
I knew by the time I was 18 that every Bob Dylan lyric( considered stripped-down " poetic genius") was a Cliche'-he tapped into formulaic cliche's and churned sayings out (anybody could relate to) that worked-similar to Modern Rap Music of the last two decades.
Bob has invoked more raw, flowing Punk Spirit from within, leaning into a microphone /methodically playing guitar and slowly building on the Real from wherever that River flows... than Iggy Pop wrapped around one with his shirt off wailing. The Lyrics /Cliche's turned out and on to his audience bounce off,and the chill up the spine walking in front of him while he performs, for me,has rivalled the best Black Gospel Choir during a Christmas Pageant.Forget the words-the Spirit is There.
He has not kept touring to give "students of the 60's" their Nostalgia fix.He performs to live,he lives to perform.Bob chooses Life-How dare anyone Question That!!!!???

" Nobody was a more dedicated appreciator of your poetic genius than me. Indeed, all of my longtime friends know me as the quintessential Dylan aficionado.
"In my college days, I taught a class on Dylan lyrics. I imagine I'm of a rare handful of people who truly 'get' your most elusive and cryptic poetry."
What a massive bighead! Yeah, you're a real legend in your own lunchtime, and only you and a "handful" of people (how many people can you fit in your hand anyway, John Henry?) understand geniuses like Dylan.
Please get over yourself. I am currently listening to Bob's concert in Linz last month and thoroughly enjoying it.

Life is truly stranger than fiction. It doesn;t get any funnier than this. I just got comp'd tickets for the Dylan concert at the Monterey Fairgrounds! My letter to the Herald in which I called upon Bob to hang it up if he can't be the artist he once was has inspired someone to give me two tickets so I can take a date. So while all of the genuflecting sycophantic toadies have been going off on me in this forum for daring to make some honest comments, I have acquired free tickets! Now if Dylan puts on a poor performance I won't feel ripped off for having gambled my money to see him. I may or may not be disappointed if he puts on one of his notoriously bad concerts, but at least I won't feel foolish for having spent my own money.
Having said this, I must now say that it is extremely ironic that so many have come to Bob's defense when what he has been telling his fans for decades is that he does not want to be on anyone's pedestal, does not want to be worshipped, is nobody's savior or guru, and that no song ever changed anyone or anything. He has been telling everyone "I'm just a songwriter, just an entertainer." But all of you on this forum who have been going off on me are actually behaving exactly in the way Dylan has always despised.
And as far as Dylan having contributed more than I ever will, actually that is totally false. I am a prolific inventor and some of my inventions have been on the market for decades all over the world. My inventions have saved lives and prevented crime. Presently I am trying to secure serious R&D funding to develop my "combustion gas liquefier" (CGL, patent pending) that promises to make clean coal technology a reality. What diseases has Dylan cured? What great tangible hands-on humanitarion things has he done? Does he go into the Third-World and live in poor villages digging wells so they can have clean water? What technologies has he invented to clean up the environment? You see, it's inventors and engineers and scientists who improve peoples' lives, not artists and entertainers. Put things in their proper perspective!
NO ONE NEEDS TO PAT YOU ON THE BACK we all see your arms are long enough.

Re: Bob Dylan : 9/11 & 8/29 Quote

Your Ad HereDarkness at the break of noon
Shadows even the silver spoon
The handmade blade, the child's balloon
Eclipses both the sun and moon
To understand you know too soon
There is no sense in trying.

Pointed threats, they bluff with scorn
Suicide remarks are torn
From the fool's gold mouthpiece
The hollow horn plays wasted words
Proves to warn
That he not busy being born
Is busy dying.

Temptation's page flies out the door
You follow, find yourself at war
Watch waterfalls of pity roar
You feel to moan but unlike before
You discover
That you'd just be
One more person crying.

So don't fear if you hear
A foreign sound to your ear
It's alright, Ma, I'm only sighing.

As some warn victory, some downfall
Private reasons great or small
Can be seen in the eyes of those that call
To make all that should be killed to crawl
While others say don't hate nothing at all
Except hatred.

Disillusioned words like bullets bark
As human gods aim for their mark
Made everything from toy guns that spark
To flesh-colored Christs that glow in the dark
It's easy to see without looking too far
That not much
Is really sacred.

While preachers preach of evil fates
Teachers teach that knowledge waits
Can lead to hundred-dollar plates
Goodness hides behind its gates
But even the president of the United States
Sometimes must have
To stand naked.

An' though the rules of the road have been lodged
It's only people's games that you got to dodge
And it's alright, Ma, I can make it.

Advertising signs that con you
Into thinking you're the one
That can do what's never been done
That can win what's never been won
Meantime life outside goes on
All around you.

You lose yourself, you reappear
You suddenly find you got nothing to fear
Alone you stand with nobody near
When a trembling distant voice, unclear
Startles your sleeping ears to hear
That somebody thinks
They really found you.

A question in your nerves is lit
Yet you know there is no answer fit to satisfy
Insure you not to quit
To keep it in your mind and not fergit
That it is not he or she or them or it
That you belong to.

Although the masters make the rules
For the wise men and the fools
I got nothing, Ma, to live up to.

For them that must obey authority
That they do not respect in any degree
Who despise their jobs, their destinies
Speak jealously of them that are free
Cultivate their flowers to be
Nothing more than something
They invest in.

While some on principles baptized
To strict party platform ties
Social clubs in drag disguise
Outsiders they can freely criticize
Tell nothing except who to idolize
And then say God bless him.

While one who sings with his tongue on fire
Gargles in the rat race choir
Bent out of shape from society's pliers
Cares not to come up any higher
But rather get you down in the hole
That he's in.

But I mean no harm nor put fault
On anyone that lives in a vault
But it's alright, Ma, if I can't please him.

Old lady judges watch people in pairs
Limited in sex, they dare
To push fake morals, insult and stare
While money doesn't talk, it swears
Obscenity, who really cares
Propaganda, all is phony.

While them that defend what they cannot see
With a killer's pride, security
It blows the minds most bitterly
For them that think death's honesty
Won't fall upon them naturally
Life sometimes
Must get lonely.

My eyes collide head-on with stuffed graveyards
False gods, I scuff
At pettiness which plays so rough
Walk upside-down inside handcuffs
Kick my legs to crash it off
Say okay, I have had enough
What else can you show me?

And if my thought-dreams could be seen
They'd probably put my head in a guillotine
But it's alright, Ma, it's life, and life only.

I have one question-- have you forgotten to take your medication?? Talking about being on Dylan's wavelength- ha you don't have a clue.
It is your choice not to buy a ticket to see Dylan but he still sells plenty of tickets to people who understand that he is a national treasure and I hope he continues touring as long as he wants. I will go see him anytime and have for the past thirty years-- he doesn't care if you think he should quit touring because he is a disappointment to you. He has always done exactly what he has wanted and that is part of his appeal. His talent, words and music will outlast anything you can offer this world.

Dylan is coming to Australia in April . I wont care if he mumbles and grumbles and fumbles his way through it all.
AS for AGE, huh? Who can do at 70 or 80 as well as they did at 20 or 30? Would we expect Chuck Berry to sound the same? How many heartbeats have they got left anyway?
