How is it that the Herald leaves out of this story altogether the non-trivial fact that Keith Vandevere is the Chairman of the Monterey County Planning Commission, the very agency that got us into this mess?

It's probably been over 30 years since a water project for the Monterey Peninsula has even made it to the County Planning Commission - and they approved the projects (mainly wells) that came to them back then. So unless you mean that they're one of the many agencies that's gotten us into this mess by approving too much growth (the cities and Supervisors are far more to blame in this regard), your statement that they're "the very agency that got us into this mess" doesn't make much sense.

all this has to do with control of supply of something that everybody needs,in this case water.
because no living thing can live without water you get evil criminals that put themselves in control of it and they can charge what ever they want they have a monopoly.
when people have ""GOD"" loving government, they don't allow this exploitation of the people, but when the forces of satan are the government, this is exatcly what they do they want to have total control of everything and reduce humanity to the status of a walking death, when satan controls everything you have nothing, and that is the plan.
people!... if you want to save the future of this country and your family and the world, elect people that believes on the ""LORD""if you don't there will be no future.

GREAT NEWS... The CARMEL RIVER will B allowed to B a RIVER again...

Set free, like a Judge overturning a bogus 'cover-up' judgement, the State Water Resources Board smacks down the MPWMD and the Foreign owned CAL-AM Water for the Oxymoron 'managment' of R water. Stand on the river bank and look at the stones where waters traditionally flowed and reflect on the Monterey Peninsula Water 'MISmangement' District politically usurpting over $20 million from property owners with the guise to manage R water.

My childhood was spent on the Carmel River in the Carmel Valley Village from the mid 1950's on and itz a good way of life... LIVING WITH THE RIVER.

Kudos to the City of Sand City for the foresight, courage and action for the Sand City Desal Plant that recently became operational.

Turn off that MPWMD spigot !!!

All the posturing in the world will never fix the "long term sustainable" supply of water that is needed. Any fix that is land bound, that is, any solution from existing land supplies, will never solve the issue. Stop making excuses for not building the desal plant. Make the commitment and move on. Maybe to add to the deferred cost, is to impliment an excise tax that will tax all individuals that come into the area. Toursits, event crowds, and the list goes on.
Whining about this and that will get you nothing. This has been going on for what, thirteen years or more. For Gawd sakes, just buckle up and fix the problem.

RLS,

Hell yes, the mess I refer to is growth-- growth without any real increase in the water supply. It's all about greed and it's unconscionable. Approving new wells in CV takes water from the aquifer, just the same as pumping it from the Carmel River.

Blame Cal-Am and MPRWMD if you will, but they're just the delivery system for the Peninsula and convenient scapegoats for the growth versus finite H2O supply problem.

The CV aquifer and entire region that depends on it is over-built, the data has been with us for a very long time (decades). Yet County Planners unanimously approve new wells, this year, in Carmel Valley? No! We need a moratorium on new wells until the desal plant is on-line.

Perplexed,

I certainly agree with you about growth and the need to stop drilling new wells in an overdrafted basin, but I don't think private property owners even need a permit from the Planning Commission to drill a well in most cases. And if the Planning Commission is approving things they shouldn't, those decisions should be appealed to the Board of Supervisors. They are the ultimate deciders. What wells have been approved by the Planning Commission in Carmel Valley this year?
