The timing of this news could not have been worse. On this same day oil hits a record high, stock market and employment hits extreme lows, we are suffering a heat wave and then we learn our electric rates will jump by 16%?

Recession is not just inevitable, it will be a self-fulfilling prophecy as we all tighten our spending only to fork it over to pay our gas and electric bills. Meantime, how will people afford to eat?

I believe the only way out of this mess is to STOP our dependence on foreign oil. And transfer big oil subsidies to develop wind and sun-based energy solutions.

What a lovely thing to read first thing in the morning. So, now it costs an additional $20 to fill my car with gas for the week, that increase will add $23-$35 a month on my electric bill. The sad thing is I wonder what the elderly on fixed incomes and social security are going to do. The charities that help with heating assistance and the food banks and such don't have enough to help everyone already and it's going to get worse in more people needing (or deserving) assistance and not being able to get it.

Guess the garden needs to be made bigger and I need to learn how to can and freeze.

You are absolutely correct. When "we" allow ourselves to be helplessly dependent on what "they" decide to do for us, "we" become victims when "they" decide to take advantage of the power "we" have given them and stick it to "us", which it seems like "they" are doing with right regularity these days. The only thing "they" are going to understand is when "we" tell them to "GF themselves" and all of their useless crap, overpriced junk, and unnecessary "necessities" and go back to living real lives of activity and productivity, instead of the sendentary "luxury" of penny millionaires. Then I can assure you ... "they" will get the message.

Enough is enough.

This rate hike will weed out those who can afford to live, and those who can't.

Air conditioning will once again be a luxury and people will start turning off lights. It's all about conservation.

At least you are not in electric cities where the rates are already 25% higher and now will be even higher.

Conservation and renewables are key to resolving some of these cost increases - as well as slowing our global warming issue! We can make it with much less foreign oil and almost without Progress Energy if we demand these changes. Localize transmission, solar, wind and geothermal.

Progress and Duke, thanks to low life piece of crap liberals, are forced to buy a special, high cost coal. That coal is becoming scarce and more expensive. Once again normal people are getting screwed thanks to g-ddamn liberals

Renewables will cost the cities even more and we are already crippled by a poor CEO and outrageous interest on an outrageous debt. Our rates are already higher than Progress - in Scotland Neck, by 30% so our next increase of 15$ compared to Progress at 16% still puts us higher. Eastern NC is suffering because of ElectriCities.

Joe Early seems not to understand that "W" and his administration are the ones responsible for the Messopotamia we are in. "W's" war for personal agenda, based upon fabricated and outsourced intel that bypassed the experts at the CIA, etc, through Cheney's Office of Special Plans, created the crisis and gave OPEC and Big Oil the opportunity to gauge oil consumers and the trickle down Reagan/Bush theory brought the increases to food and everthing else. War and deficit spending while charging it all is "W's" economic plan, hmmmm, let's see, he is leaving us with over $10 Trillion in debt and more to follow from his war, along with his "special" friends the Saudi Royals and Big Oil corporations. Didn't Reagan/Bush start all the deregulation that brought about the S&L crisis and now the banking, oil, air line and othercrisis because no one was watching the chicken coup and the Republicans let the FOXes in? Guess ol' Joe just listens to Limbutt, O'Really and Hammity, he sure spouts a lot of their talking points, especially blaming the ones not in charge for the debacle that is the Bush administration. If you voted for "W", Joe, look in the mirror and you will see why we are in the mess we are in and heading for a Depression! "W" is the reason, along with all his "loyal Bushies"/Dittoheads!

Well put. The truth if ever I heard it.
Thank you for putting my thoughts to paper.
Did Clinton leave the country in the kind of debt it is now?
George Bush & his Pappy are putting it plain the cause of all this.
Jr. had to use some excuse to continue what pa started. Now we on fixed incomes struggle while they live the high lifstyle.
How pathetic!!!!

Why does a monopoly like Progress Energy Corp. advertise? Rather than request a 16% price increase why dont they watch their spending.

They spend because of the useless, over abundant regulations put on them by the enviro-nuts and leftist representatives in the State House and in DC. They spend because they must defend any and all expansion moves agains lawsuits brought by envior-terrorist and assorted other enviro-nuts. They want a hike because they know that the Dems have a great big tax hike in store for them in November or before if they can manage to slide it through. Any more questions?

Darkhorse - that would make too much sense. They wanted the renewable legislation for one reason and one reason only - so they could get cost recovery. It was all a ploy to get benefits in another area.

Ads on TV bring new business to pay for all those things I listed previously. Why does GM advertise instead of spending on more efficient cars? Well they do but regulation eats up the profits and if they don't advertise they go broke. It's a fact of business. Same with your local grocery store.

Now why does the corrupt Democrat leadership in Raleigh advertise the lottery instead of lowering taxes. Instead of taking from the poor wouldn't that be helping them more?
