Grove Arcade exterior could stand a face lift

Otherwise known as flaking, spalling is what's caused about a quarter of the 44,000 terra cotta tiles on the Grove Arcade to fade to an almost white hue. Full Story

I think the Grove Arcade is one of the most beautiful buildings in Asheville but I am prejudice. I think it should be repaired no matter what the cost. The Grove Arcade is an inportant building for us locals too and I think it should always be pleasing to the eye. I worked in the Grove Arcade for several years before the new Federal building was constructed. Keep it beautiful.

No matter how many times I go to the Grove Arcade, I always find something new to stare at. The first place I bring my out of town guests to is the Arcade and they all love it. This building should and must be maintained in all the glory is was meant to be.

It seems to me that whomever "used the wrong materials" in the original refurbishment should be held responsible for the deterioration that has occurred as a result.

I can agree with that 100%. They should have to pay for the repairs.

If Mr. Wescott was involved in the original refurbishment how did he let the inferior tile be used? Why wasn't this done correctly the first time? It took years to renovate the building; nobody wants to go through a renovation again

Amen, Matt. We old folks do love to grunt and complain. I like to read the history of buildings but haven't found anything about the Arcade. Does anyone have a reference? I was reading in December's "Our State" about kit homes, which was very interesting. I'd like to know if there are any old Sears kit buildings in our area. I know there are a lot of houses in the Sayles Bleachery area, but I don't know if any are kit homes.

t seem that the Grove Arcade has been going down and now especially since the only person they had seem to know what the building was all about is gone .The appearance of the building has really gone down since the loss of their building engineer David Petrey maybe they should hire someone that knows something.

Instead of wasting money on refurbishing the Grove Arcade, they should use that money to round up all the homeless bums who hang out in that park near by and load them into cattle cars and drive them off of a cliff.

GOOD POINT ! ENGINEER BILL WESCOTT REJECTED THE ORIGINAL COATINGS, AND DIRECTED THAT THEY BE IMMEDIATELY REMOVED & REPLACED WITH THE PROPER COATINGS...BUT THE CP&L DEVELOPER LET HIS CONTRACTOR OFF THE HOOK !

Clarification: The Spalling of the terra cotta surface DID NOT CAUSE THE DISCOLORATION of the surface finish. The 2 Distresses were SEPARATE DEFECTS. BOTH should be remedied SOON !!!

You're right. We should move all the stores out, move all the offices out, and evict all the residents from the apartments and condos, and let it rot. It's a waste of money, after all, as surely nobody spends any money there, and it certainly doesn't contribute any tax revenue to the city, county, state, or the feds. Nope, not a penny.

You idiot.

"First of all, we’ve got to determine what’s the issue and if it’s going to be fixed, and then we’ll look at what the recommendations are to do that,” Tessier said.

Progress Energy, which is the majority owner of the building, is aware of the problem."

So let Tessier and his company and Progress Energy flip the bill.

To jenna-

I think you are a waste of a human being. Just
what makes you state that the building is a waste.
One day you might learn to appreciate history.

And as far as skyscraper downtown, how do you plan to build it and support it?

With steel beams, cement and cranes.....how else would you build and support a skyscraper?

I agree with dim bulb,

I think the grease and smell from Ali Babas has permeated the walls from the inside out and caused these tiles to errode.

What else could it be?

And I agree also with extending the building to about 23 stories, Why should the old people have the best view from downtown?

Brilliant! You sound like a very compassionate person. The homeless are here to stay and many people like myself provide assistance to them. You do sound like a typical Jax resident though ..

So granny, you care about some old buildings but not the homeless who are human beings ... you are a real piece of work!
