Natural Gas vs Propane

I have a question for some of the experts on this board. I now have a propane heating system that can be converted to natural gas. I live in a rural area that in the past did not have access to natural gas, but as of this summer we do. I hear that natural gas is the way to go for cost, but then I hear that natural gas is going up and that you don't get as much bang for the buck. Would it be prudent for me to hook on to the natural gas (only $30)or stay with propane? Your input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Steve

I am with you, i am worried about the distribution and transmissions costs associated with NG

What do you think the distribution cost is to have a large truck deliver gas to a larger tank then removed from that tank pumped into a small truck that only carries about 8,500 gallons then driven to your house and your neighborhood only to go back and do it again for the next run.
Have you ever run out of propane? Some winters when it is needed the most propane is rationed to distribution companies and rationing will be placed on your account. Delivering 100 gal. When you need 200.
When natural gas companies need to reduce usage it has commercial accounts that use alternative fuels so the home owner is covered. Propane companies are not regulated by the utilities commission so their rates can increase to whatever they want. Your best bet for reliability and cost is natural gas.

Actually the topic picked my interest but natural gas is the way to go. Also the statement in which propane is higher BTU is false propane is 91,600 where as natural gas is 100,000. I often review this site seem to take it upon themselves to give out false information. I know this topic is old but it will give truthful information to anyone researching this topic.

To Steve in Spartanburg - Do the math when you compare NG vs LP gas, and I bet you'll see NG makes the most sense. In order to make an 'apples to apples' comparison, multiply the number of gallons you use annually times .916 to convert the gallons to therms of energy. NG is sold in therms, and in my territory, the rate per therm for residential gas is currently $1 / therm. Take into consideration that most NG utilities charge a facility charge (ours is $120 / yr). If you pay rent for your tank, consider that as well. By example, 500 gallons of LP @$2.50 / gallon =$1250. The equivalent NG, 458 therms,@$1 / therm +$120 facility charge =$578 (including the facility charge). It's a 'no-brainer'! I believe most people would switch for $672 / yr... a savings of nearly 54%!
