Under the current bleak economic climate I would say "flashy phones" should not be paramount. Saving money and becoming debt-free should be our new priority. Cell phone providers are taking note and the market is responding by switching from the expensive "super-size" contract plans to the "simply-basic" more affordable Prepaid alternative. TracFone, Net10 and many others provide a viable and smarter option that keeps the user connected without all the unecessary bells and whistles and no strings attached such as a binding contract.

I have a Tracfone and I am very happy to stay with them, I pay so little every month that I have been able to save more than half what I was paying before on contract. Trcfone gives me long distance and International calls to something like 60 country's at the same rate as a local call and Texts are only 5 cents each - who needs a land line with those rates.

I have never owned a cellphone. I refuse to walk around with an electronic leash.

Call me on the land line and maybe I'll pick up the phone. Better yet, drop me a line. I do look at the mail.

Hey, Brother, I thought I was the last holdout in America who refused to have an electronic leash. I also screen all calls (answering machine, not Caller ID) and decide if I want to pick up or not.
:^)

I've also never owned a micro-wave.

The reason for that goes back to the early microwave days when I saw a news segment that was playing up the supposed benefits of microwave cooking. The industry spokeswoman said that they knew that microwaved food didn't and probably wouldn't taste as well as other types of cooking, but they expected people would get used to it and even come to prefer it.

Really. She said it.

That memory has made it easy to stick with the "olden ways" of cooking.

Good that you shun microwaves - they could hurt you because of your tinfoil hat.

If you see my preference for good-tasting food as tin-foil hat territory, I'd say the microwave industry was right about you.

Won't be long before you're demanding microwavable Soylent Green Dinners.

Great just what we need, a bunch of poor people yelling into their affordable cell phones.
Give one of these phones to that Somali pirate kid so he can tell all his friends back home that the streets really are paved with gold here.

OK, go hang out at the 7-11 and I'll call you on the pay phone.

Of all the carriers in America I'd have to say that Tracfone is the best, they offer subsidized phones at the best prices and better per minute rates than all the other carriers. I have family overseas and Tracfone gives me the opportunity to make long distance and international calls for the same price as local calls so I never have to worry about calling my family or friends.

JRobert,

As your Senator I am concerned that you don't have a cell phone or even a microwave oven...do you bathe or are you against that too?

Senator, if you imagine a connection among the three, then you're an even bigger jackass than I thought.

He won't bathe. He's afraid water will get under his tinfoil hat and cause mold and mildew.

I know that I am a jackass...haven't you ever seen the cartoon that the Democrats use? JRobert...trust me when I tell you this- I am even a bigger jackass than you think I am!

So can I count on your vote in 2010?

That depends. Last I heard you only received $4,000 from CT taxpayers, but millions from the financial institutions. How much are you willing to share with me, Senator Jackass?

JRobert,

The people of CT are very, very, stupid...did you see the story about the DCF supervisor who thought he could steal a $100.00 bucks from an ATM and get away with it? So if I am going to share some of this dirty money with you we have to think of a sneaky way for me to get it to you! Any ideas?

If I give say $1000 will you promise me that you think about buying a cell phone, and perhaps a small microwave? The whole showering thing...well pay that's your call!

Now JRobert you need to start knocking on doors and spread the word about Dodd 2010...tell everybody that I was framed my Helen and Kevin and the Hartless Courant. Tell them that my Irish cottage is not on ten acres of water-front property...it's actually 15 acres!

Like I said, Senator, it takes a real jackass to think my refusal to eat drek (meaning microwaved food) is somehow connected to showering.

As for cell phones, when I see people walking or driving with those electronic leashes jammed into their ears, I think of Borg-like drones, hooked up to The Collective.
