That is the same curve that anytime the power went out, we all knew that somebody hit the same pole. When they laid out that curve in the 60's, it was banked to the outside and at a certain speed you're headed straight at the pole... I guess in 30 years, it still hasn't changed from when I grew up there.

why is it so hard for the ij just to get facts on a story within a 24 hr period?

you would have to be ripping down that road at an insanely fast speed to knock that huge pole down, this isn't just b/c of the curve...

Cars crashing into electric poles on Point San Pedro Road occur quite often particularly on the Yacht Club bend- maybe we need speed bumps on either side or better yet have the PGE lines placed underground.

I guess speeding around tight corners like a stupid idiot does qualify as a suicide attempt. Luckily, he didn't hurt anyone else. I hope they take his license away until he's 18 and sorts himself out.

I sure hope the idiot driver is either dead or badly smashed up. I am fed up losing power and losing my entire evening sitting in the dark due to these speeding idiots.
At the very least, the license should be suspended for 5 years.
This inconveniences a large number of residents.
Hopefully you will feel the same way when it is your kid who inconveniences someone. Maybe the real reason that you are so mad is because you don't have someone special to spend time with in the dark.

Time to get a lawyer and sue the parents for loss of power and loss of evening. Time to get this kid out of the car for the next 5 years.
I hope theDMV revokes his license.
I don't like sitting in the dark all night because of some spoiled rich kid in a BMW trying to kill himself.
HOpefully he will succeed next time.
Wow you are still at it. You must really be affraid of the dark.

Those old BMW's are built solid and run forever.

I remember back in the early 1980's, four kids in a big, late 1960's model Cadillac hit the same power poll and all the kids in the Caddy died.

Shortly after that happened is when the city put the yellow signs with the black arrows indicating a turn in the road were put up.

I'm the first one to agree the spoiled little rich idiot should get the book thrown at him. But, folks, a 1988 BMW hardly counts as a car indicating wealth. By my math, that's a 22 year-old car. Probably a piece of junk. Also, could it be he only SAID he tried to kill himself to get out of more serious consequences? After all, more logical ways to off yourself, especially when you are a teen.

Kid tries to commit suicide and you guys just call him a spoiled rich kid! What is up with YOU? When does driving a 1988 car make you rich? I live here and I am no where near rich.
You don't know what's on this kids plate - his parent beat him, he is flunking everything, he has no friends,- we don't know. All we know is he isn't mature enough to know there is another way out yet - HE IS ONLY 16!! I hope he gets the support and help that he truly seems to need.

Po' folk on this site think everyone is a rich spoiled kid or an illegal alien. Maybe one day you'll be able to afford an '88 beamer if you work hard enough.

Don't be so jelous!

Whenever I'm down, I just read the comments section to remind myself how wonderful my life is. Boy there sure are some angry/miserable people out there. Let's hope they all get to spend eternity with each other complaining about anything and everything.
In the meantime, I've got to get back to work so that I can spoil my kid with a 22 year old BMW.

The I J and most media really have no social conscientious about this stuff. Alleged suicide attempt without a final police report will stigmatize the kid for the rest of their school years. Why do you do that? I guarantee the reporters can identify with the stigma they just caused. Why would you do that and why would the editors allow it without the final facts? I hope the kid has a loving family and the losers thinking about an old beemer get a life.

I got worse injuries than this wimp did!!! i was trying to pay for merchandise at the Rite Aide in the Montecito shopping center when the lights went out. We customers were told to leave and walk outside in the pitch black where I couldn't see a thing. I ended up stepping and falling off a curb and falling into a sharp plant, hit my head on the pavement and now have a lump and bloody scratches on my arms. THEN I had to drive in the dark with no traffic lights and nearly got hit by other cars in blacked out intersections at least 4 times. What a selfish idiot this stupid 16 year old wimp is. I might just sue his ass.

I rally hope your joking. But if not:

Your doctor took pictures? yeah we all feel sooo sorry for you as you whine all the way to the lawyer your type always goes to after an ACCIDENT. What did you expect the store to do? Keep you and babysit you till the lights came back on? You have to blame and sue somebody don't you?

I remember the caddy accident and was able to go to the scrap yard and look at it. I believe they moved the pole, as well as the signage that became a modern day Burma Shave sign "Fish Taco". Curve is still banked wrong, people still speed. I wonder if the police still sit at the top of the hill catching speeders.
I hope the kid is better, but also sees that actions have far reaching consequences.
BTW, Jewel, they make flashlights that go on your car keys. I have a little wind up one with LED's.

Kid runs into a pole, lights go out, people whine.

Time to grow up. As my great-great-gran used to say, S**t happens--deal.
