Has anyone encountered any problems with the Verifone MX870 such as excessive tamper messages?

YES! I hate the new MX830, Every time I unplug one of these damn things I get a tamper message. I purchased 120 of them; I already have 20 of them with the tamper message; It looks like it only lost its encryption. But sense Verifone Technical Support does not offer any Technical Support just repair. I cannot prove it. I am about to send them in for encryption again just to see.

If your unit has not been in for warentee repair after 4/09 I would suggest calling Verifonr for the most recent ECOs to be applied.
