This is not "total compesation" it cannot be. Stock options, benefits and perks no doubt lift this number substaintially. Microsoft competes for executive talent just like all corporations do, Mr Ballmer has a wealth of experiance and knowledge and no doubt would be a prize catch by any one of a number of other companies. The only way to keep talent like that is to pay them and well. Ask Toyota about the president of their N. American operations (and the only non-Japanese board member) who just flew the coup to Chrysler....
