Some of these guys made their fortune on just one idea or company (Bill Gates, Google founders, Dell founder, etc.), however most of them made it by being involved with several different companies and industries. Check out these maps from NewsVisual. They show you the connections of some of these people like Warren Buffett , Carl Icahn and Rupert Murdoch (OK, not American, but still an interesting read) . It's really incredible to be able to see just how many companies they are involved in.
