what happens when you get really old and have too much money? you buyout a bankrupt company that holds the last remnants of a struggling industry which will most likely never again hold a position of relevance in our technologically evolving society. next step: sue your readers for illegally downloading news stories.

Warren Buffett buys the Daily Progress: Fits nicely with the Charlottesville and Albemarle governments' plans to turn the local area into a corporate-controlled, over-taxed colony of out-of-state businesses. Harmonizes nicely with the big-push efforts to (falsely) portray the local area as one which is pro local businesses, green spaces, and community spirit. There is a reason why many have called it 'The Daily Regress'.

I'm afraid you're right. I have some shares of BH (no, the B shares), and I'm disappointed in this move. The allure of picking up a paper will fade with older generations. Mr. Buffet has it wrong this time, I think.

Stop giving internet news free? The "news" is so poor on the newspaper websites that they should pay us to log on to try to find something worth reading. It takes so long for the ads to load, I usually just shut it back down (I have broadband). The Waynesboro News Virginian used to be a good newspaper, even online. First they got rid of the good editors and reporters, then after most of their "news" stories becoming ads for local businesses, they want to charge $72 a year to read articles online.

CvilleMechEngr --- I think one must consider Buffet bought some weight on the Media General Board as well as a financial hold. Never know.

Guess I'm old school, but I could never glean from the Wash Post's website what I can scan through their daily paper. I know it's all there, but painful to navigate. I love google news though.

Why anyone would actually buy the Progress and actually read its distortions and slanting is beyond me. PT Barnum said it best.

Did Buffet need a tax write off? The DP should have paid him to take ownership of the worst quality in journalism. The only thing useful about the DP is it is good for house training a dog...but then again that is even limited. People who actually pay for the over charged rag are clueless.

WB wouldn't have purchased DP separately. It is a small slice of the pie. If he keeps it alive, it would be nice if he u-turned its conservative bent.

As I wake up with a Level 10 hangover from a 12-pack of Keystone Light, sip on my GreatValue coffee from WalMart, munch on a few Little Debbie's chocolate pies, draw lovingly on my Charlottesville-approved blunt, I love reading stories about... --Disabled Vietnam Veteran Makes Healthy Living Greeting Visitors to SpongeHenge in Natural Bridge --Local Supervisor Rooker Wins Roy Orbison Lookalike Contest --The Stunning New Revelations About Kathy-Lee Gifford's FengShui Office --Trayon Martin Case Spurs Run on Hoodies --Chinchillas Shown to Suffer from ADHD: Study Says --Breaking Down Stereotyps: Local Author Finds Homeless Who Smell of L'air du Temps This is hard hitting stuff worthy of nominations for a Putzpuller Prize. One other thing: How does Buffett have money when he just closed the Cheesburger in Paradise that he owns on Rt. 29. Perhaps he will abruptly close those newspapers like he did Cheeseburger in Paradise. Not good news for the local economy.

The DP isn't even fit for the bottom of a bird cage. Heaven forbid a bird would have to endure reading whats there. Now that would be animal cruelty.
