We've heard about how the boom in smartphone popularity, the dropping cost of components and the rapid rise of Android, a "free" smartphone OS, has led to a number of handset makers driving down the price for smartphones - with devices selling for less than $100 becoming more and more of a reality.

They can give smartphones away and still make a nice profit. It's the monthly fees that kill you.

History tells us that inventions develop, mature and continuously offer better value for money (excepting American car manufacturers). It's true of most cars today; certainly true of the PC and possibly true about the printed word.
However, emerging markets require low cost products and, in the case of mobile communications, a device that can create new methods of doing business and enhancing commerce.
The creativity of Apple, the success of its sophisticated iPhone, may prove to be the precursor of its demise. Just as RIM considered the BlackBerry indispensable to Corporate Business, Apple may soon find that it is almost impossible to create distinctive advances that differentiate it from a product costing only 20%. Iconic the iPhone may be ..... but saving so much is highly persuasive.
