Does anyone know why the majority of films and TV programmes that Netflix have, are unavailable?
Last year I watched the American TV programme 'The secret life of the American teenager' which no longer will play as it is unavailable. Does anyone know why this is? I live in the UK by the way.

I'm not really sure what you're asking. Are you asking why certain titles available on DVD aren't available for streaming? Or are you asking why certain things are available in the USA but not in the UK?

Either way, the answer is similar. Netflix has to pay for streaming rights for each title. If they can't get the rights, they can't stream the titles. Also, they typically start each region with a relatively small catalog of titles and continue to add more titles as they add customers.

generally it is because the studios did not want to sell netflix the rights to the show/movie. Sometimes a show/movie is temporarily removed because of quality issues. And sometimes the server holding the show/movie may be having technical difficulties.

If none of the above answers your question you may need to rephrase your question and be a bit more specific as to what you are asking about.

I've realised just how vague my question was. I was asking why Netflix gives you the option of unavailable titles, if you cannot watch them. And how shows that were available, are no longer.

that goes back to what I said in my previous answer.

To add to what I said before, I know of one tv series that cannot show all the episodes because of the music in it. They could not change the music like they did with wkrp because it was an intregal part of the story line. So it shows as being unavailable.

I know another show that was taken off for a couple of weeks and became unavailable because it had audio problems.

There are so many different reasons for it that you will just have to accept the fact that they are unavailable for whatever reason and only netflix knows the real answer as to why the specific show/movie is unavailable.

It's really sad something is not shown because of the music issue.*beeping* GREED! Haven't they thought that if they just leave it in there someone might discover it and buy the song?*beeping* GREED!

Yep, it is all about money when it comes to music is tv shows and movies. The worse part is, it is not the musicians that get the money, it is the major studios.

unavailable films are because they are open for streaming in other countries. Films that are open in Norway might be unavailable in USA and opposite.

Netflix drives me nuts with the unavailable crap! I'll be watching The Facts of Life and need to go do something, come back 30 minutes later and it's unavailable. It's sooo weird!

I've noticed this too, but if you just quit Netflix then immediately reopen it the programme will play!

well this happens to me a lot as well and it is annoying but as someone said there is nothing that can be done about it so i don't let it get to me, one of the things that irritates me is that some T.V shows are available in the U.S and not the U.K if i could pay some extra per month to get access to the whole lot i would do so, because i cannot i have now started up with NOWTV so i have a choice of even more, i used to have LoveFilm but that was before Netflix was released in the U.K so there was about 9 films available for streaming.

i have been told there is a way of getting access to the U.S Netflix released movies and it is not against the rules which i seem to find strange and i am not sure how much to believe this seeing as what someone stated above different countries need different streaming rights for the same movie/show

His question is clear to me and the answer is - " because the netflix team are idiots"

why would i want to know what you DONT HAVE!!

I dont go into mc Donalds and see grey items on the menu like "Pizza" because they dont sell them.

It only highlights how bad netflixs have been at securing rights to movies. I read that they believe its because 80% of people want to watch tv series , thats easy to say when 80% of your content is tv series!

if the owners of the movies do not want to sell, netflix cannot buy. So many studios are already under exclusive contract with other streaming services so netflix cannot get movies from them in no way, shape or form.

mcdonalds may not have grey items but they sure will tell you when they are out of something. I have also seen signs above the register where not available has been written across it. this happened at quite a few mcdonalds when they got rid of their angus burgers. so give a better example.
