No video (black screen), just audio on instant movies

When I start an instant movie, I often get just a black window (no video) with the audio of the movie. It seemed like when this happened the only way I could get it working again was to reboot. I haven't found any solutions to this when searching the web.

I finally broke down and called Netflix support. After a while, the tech on the phone told me my CPU usage was too high. So, after testing out this theory, I found that silverlight (the Netflix viewer) will work if I shut down any other programs that use a lot of CPU. If CPU usage is over about 80%, silverlight will just show a black window but will still play the audio. The odd thing is that once the movie is started, I can start those other programs back up and have no trouble watching the movie.

I don't understand why silverlight behaves this way. I think it's ridiculous that I have to shut down other programs just to start a movie and can then restart those programs again with NO effect on the movie quality. Even starting more things to bring the CPU to 99% had no effect on the movie quality. So, why this restriction? And, why doesn't it inform us why it is withholding the video, instead of just acting as if it's working fine?

What I find even more disturbing was that the tech could monitor my CPU usage in real time. He wasn't guessing that my CPU usage was high; he was reading me the numbers as they were changing, as I saw them on the windows task manager. What other information is getting sent back to Netflix?

I'm just posting this because I had a similar (but different) problem.(I had no video output to my video players, e.g. Realtime, Media Player, VLC, but I had audio. I could also watch most stuff on Youtube.) Various sites said e.g. to download codecs, update video driver, adjust hardware settings for acceleration. None of that worked for me. In my case, I have some software the computer that controls various video settings.(My computer is a Lenovo and has a program called Catalyst ATI.) It turned out that this program was the problem. There was a setting in the program for the quality of the output, e.g. home, theater, office and "custom." Mine was set to custom, and when I changed it to "home," voila, everything was working again. So, here are 4 ideas in total for this problem.

Had the same problem. Fixed tho. All I did was disconnect my system then plugged it back in.

Just a side not to John, not that he may care, Catalyst ATI isn't Lenovo-specific. It's the graphics card control center for ATI and Radeon brand graphics cards. So, that being said, people may still have the same problem BUT not have Catalyst (I have a 7970 so I have it for drivers and such). In that case, found out what does control your graphics/video (NVidia, ATI, Radeon, Intel HD x000, etc...) and find the manager for it.

Same problem but on a smart tv. Mostly when it automatically plays the next episode of a show. All black for over half the show. Works if I stop and restart the episode, but that seems ridiculous. I shouldn't have to do that for every new ep.

My smart TV is doing the same thing not matter how many times I reboot
