Has nothing to do with extremists. Murphy was only asked to comply with their existing regulatory permits, as applied for. By summary judgment, Murphy Oil's Meraux refinery was found in violation of the clean air act. Also, both domestic refineries were recently cited by OSHA, and neither has a good environmental record. Currently under Louisiana DEQ compliance order, Murphy should be bound by the same regulations as anyone else. Besides continued processing unit and tank problems, the refinery discharges pollutants into neighborhood canals. The permit limits are set based on public health standards and even just a small deviation will cause serious adverse health effects. The people in Meraux, Louisiana have been poisoned. Its cheaper for Murphy to pay the fine and sell the troubled refinery than to improve its operational integrity.
