When Monsanto controls the majority of the seed business, it's a crisis waiting to happen for agriculture. Have you read about the wheat rust that started in Africa that's spreading to all varieties of that staple crop? There's no known seed variety that's immune to it. The Agri-business practice of consolidating seed varieties into a few genetically-modified (GM) strains that can be patented, controlled, and monopolized will come back to haunt us. There are heirloom varities of wheat and vegetables that need to be saved and perpetuated. They need to be widely dispersed and used by farmers and backyard gardeners alike. Unfortunately, agri-business has turned its back on this idea. Government too has played into this by funding GM crop research and acceptance while shutting down national seed banks where thousands of heirloom crop varieties were perpetuated.
