The nation's top tobacco companies are spending less money on cigarette advertising and promotion and more money on promoting smokeless tobacco products, according to the latest data from the Federal Trade Commission.

There's an RJR quote from some time back about the need to find another addictive product because the public was becoming resistant to putting up with cigarettes/smoking. It would probably, they said, involve nicotine.

Regardless, cigarette sales are down. The majors posted huge profits last quarter only by raising the price per unit. There are multiple threads on the forum relating to that.
