Still on Windows XP? Me too. So we'll both want to be sure to install Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3), which should be available from Microsoft   by the time   you read this. ...

A little late I would say, but still a welcome addition. Of course this is coming from someone who still does not use Vista.

I installed the first Windows XP service pack 3 onto a Dell GX 270 with no problems. But instead of using automatic updates I download the full version and installed that version. I did the same for Vista SP1. I find that getting a full copy instead of using automatic updates is the way to go when it comes to service packs.

Bull. I have upgraded to Vista Home Premium and my computers are running FASTER with it on them than they did with XP Media Center Edition on it.

Vista has many improvements in it that are worth upgrading for, even if it WOULD slow down your computer a little (which it doesn't in reality): UAC (which is a LIFESAVER sometimes when a program tries to install and the windows pops up saying "X wants to install! Yes No!" (different words, but you get my point)
Windows Defender; the more robust driver system where if a driver has a problem, Windows no longer crashes out; and a bunch of small, incremental things all through Windows.

For anyone except a person running a 5 or more year old machine with a single core processor..... Vista is worth it.

It is always pleased to hear news on update. Although my little Mac fits perfect for everything but games, I will still install the new version.

Currently has some bugs for some AMD computers. Might want to go to betanews.com and read the article before causing yourself some heartache. Some Intels affected also. This one wasn't quite ready for everybody. MS is still trying to determine what the exact issues (4 at least)are caused by.

I will never willingly upgrade to Visduh....

I have XP SP3 and it works great - the key is to make sure the underlying windows install doesn't have any problems already. I would suggest a clean install if possible, or short of that running a good quality registry/system cleaner like CCleaner before you upgrade.

Most people won't know if that is because of an OEM install which is how most got it installed - may be one of the problems. Clean install hasn't worked on some models (new or otherwise)- which is another one of the problems. Take a shot if it works fine - if it doesn't, be educated enough to recover.

Don't worry, they will make new programs work only with Vista, and you will be stuck in time.

It is just planned obsolescence with a new interface.

Alot of your old dos programs working good? Dr. DOS? OS2? Win 95? Win 98? Millenium? Win XP 64? You must be awfully young or inexperienced. Someone asking advice should shy away from calling people morons who probably know more than they do. Just a thought.

i got all the systems you named running on this computer..depends on which hard drive i start up on,,,dont believe the old story that win 95 or 98 will not use over 512 megs memory i will run on one gig...and 98 will load and run faster than any other program...on a 2.5 gig pro.with 1 gig memory...and i found that with over 512 gig memory 95 or 98 never crashes or has any type of problem..and the speed is unreal..i got 24 programs runing right now.and useing a win modem..and dont even slow down
