One way to revive racing ,somewhat, at least at Pimlico, would be to crack down on crime in the area. No one feels safe around there.

The slots issue is Maryland politics at its best. The Gov we have now was against slots when the previous Gov was pushing them. Now he's all for them. Due to the fact that O'Malley is a liar I'm not suprised. The slots deal is a constitonal amendment that will be decided by referendum on the November ballot. It has nothing to do with horse racing. Its about funding the out of control spending that O'Malley and his ilk in Annapolis have decided that we need. The people of Maryland have no idea what this slots bill is all about and the Dems want to keep it that way. When the repercussions that will come as a result of slots the Dems will wash their hands and say that they didn't have anything to do with it and that the Maryland voters decided to pass it in referundum. Like I said Maryland politics at its best, gotta love it.

slots will be a financial windfall for the owners of the tracks if slots are placed there, for the owners of the horses because the purses will rise and for the breeders because horseman with roots in maryland will probably stay in maryland. slots will not increase attendance to the track for betting on the horses nor will it bring in younger fans. people who go to racetracks to play the slots rarely play the horses. except for tracks like saratoga, del mar and maybe churchill downs most race tracks are going downhill. slots subsidize many tracks but are not creating any new interest in horse racing. and maryland would be nuts to give the tracks slots at their locations while defrancis is involved in any way with receiving slot proceeds.

Slots will bring revenue to allow long, long overdo improvements to the racing business. The alternative is to see The Preakness sneak out the side door of Maryland and wind up somewhere down South.
The political manuevers of the Democratic Party are worse then horrible. Billions of lost revenue, higher taxes and a deficit completely preventable in competent hands.
So what if Magna finally makes some money? They have stuck it out in this mess and have suffered one double cross after another. I am amazed they are still solvent.
What is wrong with a first class facility at Pimlico? Doesn't Baltimore deserve a new destination and some decent reviews after decades of being the de facto murder captiol of the US?
