My company has been looking for a couple of electro-mechanical assemblers(someone who can work wrenches and wire machines) for several months. There have been very few applications received and not one really qualified person in the bunch. I am beginning to question if there really slowdown in Ohio's economy.

Randy I don't know where you work at but I can say one thing in response..I have a background in the fields you are talking about and have posted my resume on every know site. Ohio companys would rather bring in TEMP companys then hire off the street.

Many companies just say they can't find any workers so as to have an excuse to hire a temp, foreign visa, or illegal immigrant worker. This allows them to hire people that can rely on government assistance for their healthcare, housing, food, energy, daycare, and other benefits.

how much does it pay? maybe you want the best but can't pay a good wage.$12.00 bucks an hour will get you a very stressed out person these days. he has to pay for food and gas and housing. nothing like working 50 hours a week and fall further behind. our economy is killing peoples hope.

Why do people in the Rust Belt always think it's a depression?

Yes, things have slowed down here but it's nowhere near a depression. Borderline recessionary? Yes, certainly. Depression? NO.

This is why I say what I say about the Rust Belt and its obsession with Roosevelt and the Great Depression and the persistent negativity there.

Eventually, you have to move on...but that place never does.

WHY?

Yes, I'm sure that's what's happening. The company my mom worked for did the same thing.

GET A COLLEGE DEGREE. It opens up lots of opportunities that otherwise are out of your reach. Without a BA/BS your employment choices are minimal in the current environment. An illigal mexican can and will do your job for 2 dollars an hour. Get an education.

Yes...but up there it's usually a ticket out of the state.

That's not always true but, depending on what you majored in, it can very well end up being what happens.

There are lots of opportunities for people to maintain medical equipment, which isn't all that different from what I do for a living. The guy who maintains kidney machines for Akron General makes six figures and is always busy. The guy who maintains X-ray and imaging platforms makes as much or more.

If you go to Dallas or Atlanta, you don't necessarily need a degree because there are lots of people there who don't have one...but you definitely need some kind of technical training and/or training plus experience.

If you're gonna stay in Ohio, you almost certainly need a degree plus training and experience and even then it may not be enough. We had been trying to come home for years and finally gave up on it.

The opinions of an older guy who brags about having 2 paid for bmws in the garage (nothing but overpriced, expensive to repair, depreciating status symbols) of his RENTED house really don't mean all that much to many of us.
You definition of success is way different from anyone who doesn't worry about what others think of them.
From what I read, real estate in the more populated areas of California has lost more value, as a percentage, than the "rust belt". Your constant bashing of this area makes me think you are just angry that you had to move and are just striking out anyway you can.
You generally add nothing to Topix but bashing the area you couldn't make it in.

I was gonna ask if you have OCD or just diarrhea of the mouth, but I'll let that pass for now.

You tipped your hand in this paragraph. You really do want to come back to Ohio, but you can't find anyone to hire you here. You aren't competitive enough to work in Ohio, just as I suspected.

Now I see.

You don't get it. You STILL don't get it.

We have JOBS here, jobs which we would never have had at home.

You move where the jobs are...and they're not at home!

Former Ohioans I've known in the Carolinas and Georgia and Texas and California ALL (without exception) understand how important the economy was in their decision to leave home...and they also understand how closely the business culture and the negative environment and the economy are linked together.

They know. I KNOW. My wife knows. My relatives know. The people I work with know.

Why don't you?

Or, are you simply satisfied with the security of nothing and you're afraid of change and you don't want to take risks of any kind?

I know the answer that question, too.

Wait a minute!! I moved to California a year ago. My husband started a second career after retirement and worked in a home office for 2 years until the company was funded and asked him to move. We knew the cost of living situation and made a conscious decision to move for probably 5 years to give our retirement the boost it will need for the future. OUR QUALITY OF LIFE w/descretionary income was much GREATER in NE Ohio but a lot of personal reasons played into our decision to relocate, albeit temporarily.

I'm thinking rootvg is in California because he burned all his bridges (throw him a fence, hee hee) between Ohio and Cali and can't find a job across the counttry. I certainly would not have wanted an employee that spews his self-centered unproductive self all day!!! Just a guess.

Rootvg, please go and take a laxative--You are still too full of yourself.

I have lived 20 of my 30 years of adult life OUT of this area. I recently moved back because I like it here.

You are the one who doesn't get it.

First of all we didn't post the wage rate, so no one knew what to expect. Second we are trying to avoid the temporary firms since they have a horrible time wasting habit of sending anyone that enters their doors to us, without checking or caring about qualifications. We still can't get anyone with both electrical and mechanical knowlege to apply.

half the people on Unemployment DO NOT want to work and make NO effort to find a job. Where I work, these people will come in and fill out an appilication and then never show up for the interview. That way they can fulfill their requirements to have applied for jobs and continue to get unemployment. They know how to scam the system.

I'd be LMAO if it wasn't the sad truth...

China will eventually experience the same problems and decline the US and EVERY economic/political powerhouse has had through history. Enjoy it while it lasts.

My wife and I are in California because we were recruited by the people for whom we work. They paid for EVERYTHING including moving expenses. It didn't cost us a dime.

Putting resume's on job boards and working with head hunters is not the same as someone actually seeking YOU out for a job. Glad your move was paid for. Gee, did you have a year of living expenses also paid for?? Maybe you didn't get the deal you thought you did. Maybe I should pat myself on the back as the move allowed me the luxury of retiring and living quite well on one income.

It also gives me the time to look at forums (which is something new to me) to see what kind of self-centered jerks are living in California.

Have a nice day, hope you're enjoying your life and listening to yourself as no one else likes to hear your idiotic rambles.
