"Someone please tell me how having no power in your house and having to take back roads is risking your life?"

Well given that there are those that are diabetics that need insulin refrigerated and around 15-20% of the coworkers I had at lowes had diabetes (including management).

"In the recovery stage of a big hurricane, the company, the stores, and us employees, are needed by the community to get it back up and running."

Not at first. The roads must be clear and be safe before any private employer can ask for people to show up.

"That's when your employer needs you the very most. There's no law that says you can't not show up, like with some law enforcement jurisdictions, but its what you're paid for."

Road emergencies mean that any non governmental car, truck, motorcycle etc cannot be on the roads. Why is that? Well when would it end? If lowes opens then hd then menards and then pretty soon ace, true value and maybe even walmart and target and the list goes on and on.

Very little at lowes "saves" people during an emergency. Let's be honest here batteries are sold everywhere, water is usually public and again sold everywhere,

"You are a human resource for the company. Act like it if you want to stay one. I'm so sick of this silly attitude. People on here expect to be paid for just showing up. Yes, we pay you for showing up, but anyone can do that. We also pay you for your dedication, and if you're not willing to give us that, then please move on."

And if you break the law you get arrested and ultimately charged back to the store. ALL stores operate with a business license and if they risk losing that the store closes. No if's, ands or buts. Where I am for example there are some roads with no trucks on sundays. It doesn't matter what corporate says, if that's what it says on the road then you have to follow the law. A delivery manager informed us to ask the customer if they live in a area like that because trucks have been stopped by police/sherrifs and told to arrive later.

Alavarez is right.

DmxMD you also failed to note that some can be called up for the national guard duty.
http://www.boston.com/news/weather/2012/10/27...

Service at lowes is NOT serving the government.

DMx are you in Illinois? Here's a bit about emergencies there as well.
http://www.nbcchicago.com/weather/stories/bli...

So let's not risk this eh? Lowes will make money regardless of if someone is there or not. Products generally do not have to be "sold" to someone. It is home diy not home survival products.

To what manner and what extent can it be argued that lowes helps get the community "running" as you have said? Wood and nails? Any lumber yard sells the same, paint? again plenty others sell paint, tools? Same. There's no real lowes exclusive that somehow they must open up. Furthermore smaller chains and stores can probably open up faster because there is less staffing and less potential for damage.

NEDM is correct.

Lowe's is not some emergency FEMA hurricane supply center. It is a retail store just like Target or Kohl's and they don't require their employees to risk their lives during hazardous conditions like hurricanes, tornados, ice storms, etc.

To make a 67 year old lady employed as a parttime cashier come to work in these conditions is senseless. You should be hunkered down with your families and only get on the road AFTER the storm has passed and roads are cleared of trees and downed powerlines.

Listen to your local Emergency Management and not dipsh!ts like DMxMD.

Do you or your management take every single customer complaint at face value and fire an employee every time someone complains? No, because we know customers aren't always right depending on circumstances, and their complaints will always be self serving. That's human nature. In order to get someone to side with them, people will say a lot of things that are untrue, throw others under the bus for minor things, etc. Generally, in 90% of situations, I will side with the employee.
It's the same exact thing when an hourly employee goes to the SM or market level to complain about their boss or about getting written up or terminated. Usually the member of management, especially with HR oversight, was doing exactly what needed to be done, but some people always blame others when their performance is questioned. Generally the market staff is going to side with their management teams. There's a reason those people are in the position they're in. Good luck in your future endevors.
Well, from the tone of your replies to workers complaints here, you are a Troll for Lowes. I am a pissed off Lowes worker myself, and have been around long enough to recognize a Kleptocratic Management when I see it. If I were a cynic I'd think that Niblock and Gang were looting the company for personal gain. Trying to be fair I'll just posit that they are incompetent, and financially lucky.

They used all these managers for years to get to the place the company is then, they throw them out like trash we are talking people that have 10 to 20 years with the company. The bottom line will bite them in th ass when they start trying to improve moral. There is no morality of a company that does this. Keep the ass kissers and let good people go. personally know of at least 15 people that they have done this to. A matter of time till it comes back to them.

I play race for the cup everyday. But half the store hasn't taken 1 quiz. Some tell me they not allowed to go back and do it cause they don't have time, yet they push it to be done. So you got maybe 20 out of 120 doing quiz's.

Other retailers have deposits on carts so it makes people return them to get the money back. Some have machines to make it easier to move dozens of carts at the same time.
They had the same bit about the survivor game. LP saying everyone should play it but it was largely a waste of time.

I had several managers who treated us lower paid employees like crap. I have found out that if you complain to corporate long enough and loud enough, without leaving your name of course, they are eventually shown the door.

At my store they let 5 ASM's go, a month later they hired 5 to replace them. One of the ones that were fired came back a week after being fired to be a department manager.

It's really a shame to see the way things are done at my store, Chester has no cares for his employees . At the store yearly meeting which they served lousy food they proceeded to give out candy bars to the employees that were recognized for outstanding service...Seriously Mr. Portly could not even give out a $5 gift card to Dunkin D's out of his $70,000+ bonus to really show his appreciation. What's next year gonna bring, him standing at the podium giving out one M&M each? If he was ever over in Afghanistan as a captain leading his troops into battle they would let him go first to be shot and killed then fight the battle. Seriously Fred show some genuine concern for the CSA's that bust there butts to make that store what it is. Oh and next time smile when you say thank-you to the employees that help meet your goals for inventory.

Managers at Lowe's are cowards who try to avoid any and all confrontation with employees & customers alike. I was told not to make eye contact with ASM's and manager at my store. I was also told not to speak to the store manager unless spoken to and when I did speak to them I should kiss their ass and treat them like they walk on water. All of this from my HR. What a joke. Bunch of grown men wearing little vests with self-esteem issues. Just pathetic.

Lowe's is a $hit place to work.

I worked at Lowes almost 20 years and got let go. They replaced me with 2 minimum wage workers who didn't know anything. I gave the customers 20 years of experience and professionalism and now they get the deer in the head lights look from these two. Sales in my department have dropped drastically from what I heard from friends who still work there. It's all about $$$$ with Lowes. Take comfort in the fact that they will bury themselves in the end.

All these people on this site who defend Lowes are fools and they will find that out in they end too. I was an employee for many, many years and I have watched a lot of people get walked out. You always hope it won't be you, but don't count on it. I gaurentee your time will come. If you don't get a manager that doesn't like you, then you will reach a pay rate that is too high. Personally I did both, my store manager (a married guy) as am I kept scoping out my crotch as he walked by me. Then I found that a lot of times when I was in the men's room he walked in behind me so I started using the stalls. I told him I was going to report him and I was gone in a month. I told HR what was going on and the bitch said I was trying to get out of trouble. I had no trouble in the 15 years I was there and because of 1 manager I was gone.

Look at it as a business sense people! Lay off 1,700 senior managers based on a salary of an average of a random number say $45,000 a year, then multiply 8,000-10,000 part time "WE" employees at say an average of some other random number $10 and hour for Friday, Saturday, Sunday and you have a almost a $50 million difference. Would you rather stores shut down and all lose your job or have a 1,700 people lose their jobs. 101 in Business Management, first thing you learn in college for Business Management.
Well, the Obama Care that got passed says that if you're part time 29 hrs or less, you get no health care. Above that the company has to purchase healthcare for you. Comprehendo?
