Was it ever? It's an experimental position. Wildly successful in my store, but nobody has ever considered it a "safe" position.

Lowes is changing organizational structure. No operations manager, no sales manager, no zone managers. They are going back to the Assistant Store Manager structure from y2k timeframe. Those people in Ops, Sales, and Zone positions now, will become the new Assistant Store Managers in four areas of the store. Who fills those jobs depends on how each manager was previously rated. Some will loss their jobs, others will shift postions.
This is one of the only comments from the first couple of pages that was accurate. It's amusing to see so many people posting with "facts" that are just dead wrong.

rather not be specific but I'm in the northeast, two minorities from one store in sister district, but only three total from our 16 stores.

Do we want to work for a company that does everything secretly...and act cowardly and call it a RESTRUCTURING.....BS... It was a massive layoff/firing of good hardworking people that helped make OUR company what it is today... Lets Just change the sign to say HOME DEPOT....

Hey In the Know...

The severance package sucks and says that those let go have to keep their mouths shut to get it.... It is more of a buy off!! To keep the managers silent.
Luckily it doesn't say their spouses have to keep their mouths shut and I won't!!!!! Even if it did I would not keep my mouth shut!!
I hated Lowes before because of all the time and hours my hubby worked. All the family events he had to miss, all the times they called him to come in last minute and he DID IT...
I am glad he is not there anymore... I am mad at HOW they did it..
We are considering NOT taking the package!!

Hey elmo
It's fair from the standpoint that the company didn't have to give anything !
And if one of them wants my Specialist job,I'll take their severence pkg. and go on my happy way.

Hey Stacy,

Another wife here... The severance stinks doesn't it?? It is more of a payoff to keep quiet.. We had the exact same situation, except my hubby was off that day, he was babysitting our young son, so they called him in. I had a Dr's appointment.
His store is supposed to bonus, we aren't even sure if they will pay him the bonus. I don't trust Lowes to pay it. We definitely would not send the package back until after March 15th.
Take care of yourselves and Good luck..

Oh it's true...and feeling the pain. My husband just lost his job today at 1:00 pm! After 11 years of working 60 + hours a week, a perfect work record and going above and beyond the call of duty they let him go. How nice that they give you a letter and tell you your last day is two days away. Don't ya think a little notice would have been nice. At least 2 weeks. I guess we should be thankful for the severence. Sure doesn't make up for all the overnights and loooooooong hours!

Hey happyelmo... Yes write Oprah... tell her.. I am a wife of one of the unfortunate ones and I am sooooo mad at lowes... Treating my hubby like he is a criminal in front of our young child. Calling him in on his day off. It stinks!!
This needs to go national!! Tell everyone!!! Lowes stinks!!

The way Lowes treats their employees makes me Boiling Mad!!!
My husband works there and has been with the company for 17 years. He knew all the people personally who lost their jobs and were escorted out of the store like they were common criminals after giving them years of service.
Who knows he may be be next! I told him he needs to slowly start using up the 6 weeks of sick time he has before he looses it but he said if he did that he would most likely be terminated. Store morale must be at its lowest! Employees are afraid for their families.
I watch Opra and she did some home improvements for people and Lowes took advantage of the free publicity by doing it for her show, of course for free and behind the scenes they treat their workers like shit! When I saw this last year and the year before it made me so mad.
I am wondering if they can get away with some of the stuff they pull in all the states. Arkansas has nearly no laws for workers rights so it is horrible.
I am going to write to Opra, wonder if she will stand up for the little man and tell corporate to get lost?!

A work slow down, is this possible? It would have to be coordinated company wide, same day or days. I don't have too many other ideas,at least not yet.....

Why would people consider doing this? Nothing is going to make the company suddenly re-hire people and go back in time. And why would the people still working there do something that would put their own jobs in jeopardy, both in the short term (disciplinary) and in long term (damage to the company that writes their paychecks).

I know the people that have been dismissed are angry, but why would you want to hurt the people that you worked side by side with? I guess misery just likes company.

I know people need to vent off their frustration at being let go, but some of these ideas are just silly. Like calling Oprah or involving a union. It's no news to her that the economy has caused companies to do layoffs. Nothing in the way that Lowe's has done this is any different than how many other companies have done theirs. Sears did the same thing, OfficeMax, too many others to list. Layoffs truly suck for everybody involved, but this is something that our generation has had to deal with more than any other generation. I myself have been through it 3 times and I will never say that it didn't have long term consequences on my family, but I also never would try to take any action that might cause another person to lose their income and be in the same situation.

I heard they are putting 2 departments into 1. Like hardware and tools will be together, lumber and millwork will be together etc. My question is what will they do with the department managers that will lose there position with the linking of departments. Will they get layed off or be forced to step down. Any Thoughts?

Dont know guys and Gals,
Lowes is a good company, but being forced to make hard decisions.
is it fair that the store managers go on their Party vacations to Vegas, Nope. Or that the former CEO got a multi million dollar bonus, Nope.
But that's life. We knew it wasn't perfect when we joined but no company is.
heck the new policy and procedure on Time and attendance coming out isn't fair either but what can we really do?
if we fight they will fire us and hire someone cheaper.
Its better to remember this later. when they need someone to stay and close because someone called in, or to work on your day off. Its a job they dont care about you so dont care about them.
do your job to the best of your abilities but jump ship if another better offer comes.

i just hope they arent removing commissions. But if they do it will be after the national sales meeting thats when they allways take something away.

I have heard that they will be doing away with PSA'a and going to district teams

Just curious as to the stores with peeps fired.....Wonder if those stores were close to bonusing this quarter. If so, then lowes saved money there too...also, from someone in management for 25 years, the more you take away from experienced sales people, the less they sell. In Lowe's, the specialists won't stay if they get crapped on because they can walk out the door and right into another company....this move and what else they have up their sleeves seems to be a boy wonder's corporate 's decision to make himself look good at others expense. No one apparently looked at the big picture, just short term for the stock holders. Lowe's is up 20% over last year....This is kinda like being fed the idea that terrorists flew planes into 4 places and all vaporized

All i know is that before all this everyone in are store was like a team and we really supported lowes. We always gave more than what was expected of us and worked 15 hours straight to get resets done only to be asked to lose the time at the end of the week. I know i will still do my job and run my department but i think the thoughts of doing more than what is expected has gone out the window. I will do what i have to in order to keep my job but at this point everyone in our store is doing there own thing now instead of working as a team. I guess that is to be expected. And i know that from now on if im asked to work a 15 hour shift and then asked to lose it before friday i will never do it again or ask anyone in my department to do it either.
