If he did not want anyone to know about his former drug problem, he should not have told ANYONE about it. Otherwise talk to the DM and let her know how you feel, be open and honest. You can go to HR but this sound slightly petty to me. Not to mention it is not even about you, it is about you coworker.

(1) If any member of a team is repeating something like that, then they should be keel-hauled. What, they have nothing better to do? While it may not be a violation of any documented standard, rule, or law, it certainly is morally reprehensible.

(2) Either the person with the problem is running around spilling the beans, or the only person in the store who should know about it (the HR) is putting things out that they shouldn't - and they are held to a far higher standard.

Free advice -- Gossip is sport in the stores and nothing can stop it. If you choose to report this feel free because in the end you have to do what you feel is right. But if the gossip is as bad as you seem to let on, then what makes you think that your reporting it would be kept confidential?

I can hardly get through these ridiculous posts. SPEAK UP. When you hear someone gossip you should say "can you please not talk about this in front of me or others, first you don't know if it's true and second it is none of our business". If it makes you unpopular, so be it. People stop gossiping when they see me come, because it is mean and disrespectful.

Live by the "do unto others" rule .. and for pete's sake...get the hell off of here, grow up and handle it like a mature adult. No one wants to speak up anymore and obviously you are one of them.

I strongly agree with Bullies and Gossip generally. However, what is merely gossip in a personal situation may rise to the level of unlawful conduct in an employment context. The facts as set out in the initial post would seem to point to a breach of Title I of the Americans with Disabilities Act as I wrote previously. Not only should the first poster speak up, but she should report what she heard to HR.

Remember the old game telephone? Sometimes it can be like that. I had a friend that got into a tad of a scuffle one night at a movie theater. The next day the rumors were so bad some said he was stabbed and other said he died...not a single punch was thrown.

Sometimes rumors aren't even about people but about other businesses and the company. For example lowes is NOT owned by walmart.They own no shares and there's no connections with any of the boards of directors. Yes there might be some similar use of colors but if having similar colors means ownership than the USA, UK, France and Russia would be the same!

If you ever want to see some of this look up the bright ideas and read some of the odd stuff that gets suggested.

Some people do share way too much about their personal lives. I had a sm that told everyone his wife was pregnant before the first trimester was over, she miscarried. As happy as he was when he told people she was pregnant he should have waited longer to tell.

There's fair amounts that are outright lies either said or spread just by corporate itself as well. LP used to say that no employees or customers ever died in its stores...until the OSHA records said otherwise. A sales manager gave a speech about selling a project and later I overhear him telling another it was just bs to look good. Then there were countless others that used to answer code 3's to boost their numbers up, specialists and zm's used to do that all the time.

Gossip falls under the rude and unfriendly guideline I believe. Its a pretty severe infraction, if Im not wrong you can be terminated or put on final notice.
