Has anyone read on connections that in some markets the company has replaced appliance specialists with part timers? I read this two weeks ago, and there were several comments on it, but the blog has mysteriously vanished..........

I read that thru attrition after the spiff/commission loss that the outgoing Appliance Specialists were not being replaced with any full timers only part timers. Some people were posting their dept head counts but nothing on a whole doing away with the Appliance Specialist.

I have an open appliance spec position. We opened the posting like normal a few days ago. Haven't heard anything about that yet.

We have however discussed having more PT CSAs instead of fewer FT ones through attrition. Part of an effort to reduce the insane number of seasonals we hire and fire each year. We would rather have more people we can just give extra hours too during peak seasons.

And pay less benefits/wages as well. That always helps.

So now we have low income wage earners with partime hours and no benefits-health insurance etc. The big boys make millions and the ones that help make their millions get the crumbs. Greed, corporate greed. How much is enough? "Just a little bit more." Sad state of affairs for America. Obama said he created X # of jobs-how many of those jobs pay $8-10 per hour and no benefits? Thank you Mr. President and all the CEO's and executives of corporations. The rich get richer and the poor get poorer. The minions take care of their wealthy slave drivers.

Pedro, can't argue, but to escape THAT system you have to get out of retail. My father was a Montgomery Wards store manager in the 50s and he describes it the same way it is now. Masses of low wage, low benefit workers feeding the company above. Conversely, both of my kids, late twenties, landed new jobs, one as a QA for a large rail manufacturer, the other for a mining company. The pay and benefits are excellent. One has an Associated degree, the other high school. They aren't PHDs. So, it's out there, but never in retail unless less you're in upper management.

Our authorized head count for s/s hasn't changed. In our market we have made a big push to add PT's in the big specialty depts to put s/s in better selling windows and give them time to sell install projects.
For a 30mil store, we added 2 in Millworks, 1 more in Flooring, 2 in Cabinets, 2 in Appliances, 1 in Plumbing.

Yikes! I don't even know what I would do with that much extra help. Granted I'm only in a $22M /year store. I think our paint desk could use about 3 more CSAs though.
