Zyprexa has been heavily promoted for 'off label' use.

Anti-aggression drugs are just that, they make you too sleepy to care.

TEN TIMES DIABETES incident with Zyprexa users

Zyprexa, the best- selling schizophrenia remedy from Eli Lilly & Co., with $4.2 billion in sales last year.

Zyprexa was the best-selling schizophrenia treatment in the second-quarter and had the sixth-highest sales of any prescription drug worldwide, bringing in $1.1 billon in the quarter

Should you take ZYPREXA? What are the Risk?

Zyprexa (Olanzapine) is Lilly's largest seller. It used to be the first-place atypical antipsychotic in the U.S. but has dropped to third. This is probably because doctors and patients have learned, through the NIH CATIE study and through thousands of lawsuits, that it has the most dangerous side effects of all the drugs in its class.

It causes diabetes, hyperglycemia, and death. 8000 plaintiffs settled with Lilly in 2005 and are still waiting for payment.

Many states have sued Lilly for alleged fraud, for not revealing its side effects, and for compensation to their state's Medicaid programs for the costs of the drug as well as the costs involved in caring for people who got such conditions as diabetes from the drug.

Lilly has also been charged with alleged fraud in off-label marketing of the drug for children.

Many individual lawsuits remain outstanding and will begin to be heard once the 8000 plaintiff suit has been finalized. Lilly states that it will "vigorously defend" itself against these individual lawsuits, but a number of them are for death allegedly caused by this drug

This is the kicker...Zyprexa is only FDA approved for schizophrenia (.5-1% of pop) and some bipolar (2% pop) and then an even smaller percentage of theses two groups.

So how the heck does Zyprexa get to be the 7th largest drug sale in the world?

Eli Lilly is in deep trouble for using their drug reps to 'encourage' doctors to write zyprexa for non-FDA approved 'off label' uses.
The drug causes increased diabetes risk, and medicare picks up all the expensive fallout. There are now 7 states (and counting) going after Lilly for fraud and restitution.

My father-in-law has late-stage alzheimer's. His doctor just prescribed Zyprexa in the 5mg dosage. The dr said this lower dose does not have the negative side effects or increased risks. I'm not so sure. Anyone with info?

My opinion is that if you want info (to prevent your father from becoming another Daniel Haszard Lilly Hater) you should contact another doctor and get a second opinion. Exactly what Daniel should have done when his doctor prescribed off label.

I admire you wanting what is best for your in-law...so don't take the opinion of anyone on this website because most likely they won't have accurate information and you don't know if they are even being truthful.

Good luck!

Since starting a 2.5 mg dose of Zyprexa at night, my husband, who has Alzheimer's, has been much less aggressive. I take care of him and showers, etc. have become much easier for me. However, I do notice he is more confused, but the good out weighs the bad. Blood tests should occasionally be given since there is research showing it can cause diabetes. He still very young to have this disease, and it is devastating for a family and nothing to joke about, as some have done on the posts.

I think Zyprexa is that kind of drug which helps you to sleep but if we work whole day then we don't need it... We should not make a habit...

Health Law Surprise Is Page 1617 Demanding Which Drugs Work BusinessWeek - Alex Nussbaum, Meg Tirrell - ‎6 hours ago‎
Zyprexa and Johnson & Johnson's Risperdal, nonetheless jumped 43 percent in four years to $14.75 billion by 2009, according to IMS Health Inc.,...

“When you compete against other technologies, you’re going to have to demonstrate scientifically that you measure up and that takes time and money and sophistication,” Lerner said.

“The companies are now going to have to not just launch new products with marketing hype, but they’re going to have to demonstrate evidence of superior clinical effectiveness,” said Vivian Coates, an ECRI vice-president.

The fallout from a 2005 study of antipsychotic medications shows the most effective treatment doesn’t always win, said Robert Rosenheck, a psychiatry professor at Yale University School of Medicine in New Haven, Connecticut.

The U.S.-backed study found a 50-year-old drug that may cost about $2.50 a day worked as well as newer medicines priced eight times higher, Rosenheck said. Sales of the next-generation antipsychotics, led by AstraZeneca Plc’s Seroquel, Eli Lilly & Co.’s Zyprexa and Johnson & Johnson’s Risperdal, nonetheless jumped 43 percent in four years to $14.75 billion by 2009, according to IMS Health Inc., a collector of prescription-drug data based in Norwalk, Connecticut.

“The overwhelming weight of very aggressive marketing for 15 years shapes attitudes in ways that aren’t likely to be changed by research,” said Rosenheck, author of two antipsychotic comparison studies, in a telephone interview.

If you Google theses competitor atypicals, you will find they do not have the bad PR of Zyprexa
Abilify
Seroquel
Clozaril
Risperdal

Even the first-generation antipsychotics,( 20 times cheaper) such as haloperidol (Haldol) or chlorpromazine (Thorazine) don't get the bad rap of Zyprexa

Eli Lilly has made $40 billion on $10 a pill Zyprexa and it was way oversold and caused diabetes and in some cases sudden death.

Zyprexa was pushed by Lilly Drug Reps.
They called it the "Five at Five" (5 mg at 5 pm to keep nursing home patients subdued and sleepy) and "VIVA ZYPREXA" (Zyprexa for everybody) campaigns to off label market Eli Lilly Zyprexa as a fix for unapproved usage.

I am thoroughly filled with agony over the decision to increase my mother's Zyprexa dosage to 10mg. She was on 5mg to combat psychosis related to her advanced Alzheimer's. The doc originally suggested we increase her Xanax to twice her normal dosage. I lobbied for the increase of her Zyprexa. She is 81 y/o, with advanced Alzheimer's. I was not aware of what appear to be serious, horrific Zyprexa side effects. Should we stick with the Xanax increase, rather than go to 10mg of Zyprexa? The Zyprexa/dementia posts definitely have me spooked. I understand now why the doctor was so reluctant to increase the Zyprexa. Any suggestions and/or caveats?

I can recommend a reputable pharmacy (Zyprexa) professional-meds.com/item.php... I received the order and it was on time and the pills work great.
