Dave Martin is a good man. We all miss him because he was like part of our family. Like Stressed I too have faith in our current leadership team. I am not sure how well you know Craig Nichols or Jeff Wisti but they are both great people. Actually Craig did work directly for John Steensma as both Engineering Manager and Operations Manager and spent like 6 years here growing up before he went to Madisonville to be there Plant Manager. I grab Craig when he is on the floor and ask him questions all the time. He always tells it straight. If you don't know him, you should talk to him when he is on the floor or even pop up to his office when your not working.
Times have changed, no doubt. The negative changes going on over the past 6 months are outside our control. We have the same business that was booming 6 months ago we just aren't building as many of those parts because no one is buying cars and trucks. I have asked several corporate engineers questions when they have been at the plant in the past few months about what corporate thinks of Mendon. They have said we have a great team and we are one of the best plants they have. They have said even with the industry downturn we are still one of the top sales plants and 90% of our other plants are hurting even worse then we are. They also have said that Mendon is always discussed for new business opportunities.
I just asked Craig the other day what we were working on for new business. He told me we have a new PM door panel line coming in around April to replace the current one that adds multiple machines including Laser cutting machines? He said they just got approval to bring in work to fill up the Atom Press. He also said they are going to really ramp up trying to land some non-automotive business from surrounding industries like medical, furniture, and RV. He also said that now that the M2 line is only service they are developing a plan to strip the line down and free up some more space and will be considered for other large parts like Headliners, Doors, etc.
I asked Craig when he thought things would pick back up and he said we had a lot of customer downtime until the end of March but he thought things had pretty much bottomed out and would slowly climb back up after that period.
Hopefully our industry bounces back soon and hopefully we are one of the last good suppliers left standing. If that happens, our future should be bright. Many prayers to all our Mendon families and those that have been laid off during these tough times. If we don't have one another we are lost.
Thats great news if your management is smart enough to think outside of the box," Other than automotive contracts only" Too many plants are focused only on automotive when there's better contracts out there. Best of luck!

But what business is out there? We are automotive as far as I know at IACNA. What are you talking about? Like when I was in plating for Whirlpool

Many of the automotive suppliers are diversifying to non automotive contracts to keep their plants viable. This is a smart move now in the economy, there's many products made in the USA that suppliers could take advantage of. We need not to think just because were plastics ,were automotive, were much more than that!

Another salary cut was made today. Senior as well as valuable members were let loose.

Mass transfers are ocurring with us. I am going from 1st to 3rd in a dept I havent ever been in before.

Mendon is strong and will make it. The worst is over we all hope and the remaining people are the strongest we have. 2009 is a rough one. MIM

Mr. Plate was here for a short time. He is in Alma as the plant manager I assume still. He again was not here long.

What do you know of him? Let me know and I can ask around. I am still imployed, one of the few hourly that have not been forced off 1st.

Ask me a ques...I can ask around. We never really got to know him as he was fast tracked throught here.

Yes, Mr. Plate is in Alma still. I was just curious about what you could tell me about his leadership skills. He has been here for a couple of years now but it seems like things are more unstable all the time. It very well could be the economy, though. Also, there has been a gentleman by the name of JODY hanging around here. Rick has stated that he is a candidate for our operations manager position. What kind of leader is he? What can you tell me?

Jody is very smart and hand's on. My line had the priveledge of his assistance on a program launch. He works long hours (I mean Loooooooooong), is a family man. He cares and is very nice to talk to. Funny, but keeps u working. He gets with his brain, work ethic, people skills. I hear he is from around there. If you get him you are lucky. Our loss.

Mr. Plate was very distant. Never came out on floor.

Yes, Mr. Plate is very, very distant! This is something that I, nor the rest of our associates, understand. We've always been used to a plant manager who'll come out and be a part of the action. This is what Jody seems to be like. I have heard nothing, nothing bad about him. Usually, as you probably know, there isn't much good that gets stated about management, but so far, the people seem to be warming up to him. Therefore, even though Jody is not in line to be our plant manager, he'll most likely fill this void for us since the people have all but counted Rick Plate out anyway!

Isn't that the job of a plant manager - to do nothing? And by the way, I did not mean to mislead you, but I am absolutely not a salaried employee! Also, I do not agree with your satement "You guys are hurting as much as us." In Alma, when we had to take our concessions, we were told that management would be taking some cuts along with us. Wrong! It wasn't until January of this year (2009) that they finally had a cut in pay. A whopping 4% of their salary. We, the Union membership, had to give up immediately "in order to be competitive". What a joke! What do you think? Is this what happened at your plant as well?

Heard from the strange salary saftey guy that they got a 4% decrease on 1.1.09. Our concessions match yours.

Our salary guys/girls other than the weird guy and a few more, are working thier butts off. So Mr. Plate has what issues? I asked around and no one really remembers him or had worked for him. The thing about his dad i mentioned a few posts back about being a Lear bigwig might be incorect. Mystery man is in Alma? Is Jody their then? Heard he was not herre.

It appears to me that they are going to hire Jody here in Alma. He was still here as of yesterday, anyway. He seems like an alright guy. The question is - does he have the ability to lead the plant.

Someone just called me who read your post. Is Mr. Plate being replaced by Jody? She had heard Jody was going as operations manager.

What does Mr. Plate lack? Do you know how he got to Alma from Mendon? Not in a spaceship right? A copy of the younger female associates I would with said he was weird. Being not young he never talked to me.

Jody is not replacing Rick (Plate). He has been a candidate for ops. manager. Rick came to Alma after we went through two other PM's who were very short term. What he lacks is personality. He does not seem to be able to relate to us out on the floor. I don't believe that he knows even half of the workforce by name. Our plant isn't very large, so this really can be accomplished. It would require him to leave his office once in a while to get aquaited with his workforce. I don't think that it's because you're not one of the younger ones that he didn't talk to you much. From what I see, he only wants to talk to his management group. He talks to us as little as possible.

I hear he was a star football player. Maybe he is use to attention without giving any. He is older but still gets it I am sure.
