I had this procedure done in Feb,/09. It has been 5 weeks and I am still not feeling well at all. I just got finished my 2nd round of antiobiotics for a urinary track infection. I urinate constantly and am very frustrated. I am going back to my doctor today to see if I can get some answers. Also, I still have an odor and am told this is normal?? I just feel like I have flu symptoms all of the time. My lower back is very painful. I am 57 yrs. old. Any feedback would be great....

To All on this forum,
I just met with my doctor yesterday as I have SUI. He recommended this TVT-O procedure. There had been confusion as to whether a fibroid I have was pressing on the bladder and causing this, so I was mostly concerned about a myomectomy. Was told the myomectomy was unneccesary, so I agreed to the TVT.
I decided just to get a little more info on what this surgery would entail, and came across this site.
I am shocked that so many people are having such horrible problems. It sounds like you saved me from a world of pain. I will live with the SUI rather than risk any of this.
Does anyone have any advice on how to at least minimize the SUI without undergoing surgery.
Best of luck to you all on a lawsuit.

Debra,

I am sorry to here of your Mother's complications. I know you are a long ways away, but I do know of a good doctor in Jackson, MS. and I have heard about a good doctor in Cleveland, Ohio. If you are interested in either, let me know.

I wholeheartedly understand what she your Mom is going through, and by virtue of what she is going through, what you too are going through. I hope I can be of some help.

I had my first surgery on Dec 28th in 2004..hysterectomy, TVT, and tummy tuck! When they got inside they found my left ovary had to be removed and very large hernias. I ended up with an open wound that took 50 ft of gauze inside me at each dressing change! Nursing home..critical care..the whole nine yards! I had a place that wouldnt close so finally in Nov I had surgery again..this time to remove the hernia mesh and reconstruct my abdominal wall from the infection! I am now 4 months and a week post op and still have a drain tube! According to my records BOTH the products used, tvt and hernia mesh are of those recalled..serial numbers all perfect match! I need help..I have suffered for so long and still to this day am! I am seeing urologist now in hopes of the TVT being removed. Any help or direction with my case would be wonderful. My email is ssimplysusie@aol.com

I had tvt surgery last week and today I noticed a fullness in my vagina. Is it normal to be able to feel the mesh through the vaginal wall? Will that go away over time? Hope someone can help

Casey,

It's not normal to feel the mesh just under your tissues. Mine eroded my tissues away, and was exposed in my vagina. You need to make an appointment right away.

This is for many, a very dangerous device. If I were you, I would insist it be taken out immediately, but that's just me. I sincerely hope you will give that suggestion a great deal of thought though.

Please read posts 680-690. I have posted, for women having problems with erosion of tissues or adherence to organs and nerve beds from this mesh, my recommendation as to what steps to take to protect yourselves as best you can. There are instructions on how to file an adverse event with the FDA, etc...

Please get checked ASAP. There are so many of us with problems already.

best ~ Suzanne

I am due to get this damn tape out next month. It is a year this month since I have been suffering with severe pain, off work and taking a boat load of pills every day just to make it through. My tvt was done in Jan 2007 with a hysterectomy. I am so tired, but am very hopeful with the mesh removal to return to a "normal" life. I have severe left groin pain, and am told the tape is sitting on my ileoinguinal and/or femoral nerve. I very rarely ever drive anywhere because I am impaired due to the narcotics I take to relive the pain. Also IF this surgery is successful I have the next phase of going off the pills. I am very hopeful. Thank-you to all of you who share your stories. my e-mail is deborama2@live.com

Hi, I had the sling surgery 4 years ago after the birth of my 3rd child. I have had two erosions of the sling through my vaginal wall since then, and sharp pains that shoot down the pelvic region on a regular basis. I have been to my doctor repeatedly over the past four years feeling like I have had another opening(erosion), due to this pain. It hurts when I have sex, and the past year, I have had repeated bacterial infections of the vagina, and have been on meds consistently for the past 6 months for treatments. I also found myself pregnant last Aug, unexpectedly, since I was 40, but had a 2nd trimester miscarraige. I know I'm older, but I am wondering if this sling/bacterial infection/misscarriage are related. I am on my way to a urologist tomorrow to try to find help for this pain, I feel like I have another erosion, but my gyno did not see one in the vagina. I just wonder if it could be in my uterus. I am very nervous about the dr. visit, I just want to feel normal again, I also want to "want" to have sex again and not worry about pain or bacteria. Any suggestions of where to go for the best help?

Hi Kim,I had my implant in June 2008.I had infections ever since on & off.Where can I find the website about FDA Pulblic Health Notications?Any ifo appreciated.
Suzanne wrote:
Kim,
I don't understand why, after the FDA issued the Public Health Notification regarding surgical mesh anyone would have this done, unless you were unaware.
If that is the case, your doctor should have told you of these risks, so that you could make an informed decision. If he or she didn't, I would be looking for a Urogynecologist to remove the mesh, before it has time to become fully embedded in your tissues, before it adheres to any of your organs or nerve beds or before it erodes through your vaginal wall, and then I would look for an attorney to represent you in a non disclosure case against the doctor.
If you decide to have it removed, write the hospital and your doctor a letter, clearly stating that you want to take home any and all of the mesh extracted from your body, and store this container in your freezer. Once these mesh products are recalled, and I strongly believe they will be, you may be able to find a lawyer to help you sue the pants off both the manufacturer and/or the doctor for turning your life upside down.
The FDA's Public Health Notification only addresses the more than 1000 cases reported directly from nine manufacturers. What it does not take into account are all of the adverse events that have been filed directly with the FDA by individuals or doctors on behalf of these individuals, as this number is far greater than the more than 1000 cases that are referenced. Ethicon's Tension Free Mesh has 893 adverse events on file with the FDA alone on the Maude Database, which is a part of and maintained by the FDA, and not in a uniform manner.
It thoroughly disgusts me that I was never told that Ethicon's TVT Device, which received approval by the FDA in January of 1998 was based on the substantial equivalency (as cited in their TVT proposal) to the predicate device ProteGen Sling Collagen Impregnated Material. This predicate device was pulled from the market after a firm initiated recall a mere 14 months later in March of 1999. This self initiated recall occurred five years and three months prior to my doctor implanting the TVT in me.
When the manufacturer themselves pulled the ProteGen Sling from the market, the company cited "complications with a higher than expected rate of vaginal erosion and dehiscence" and further stated "and does not appear to function as intended." It defiesí reasoning that the FDA would not pull from the market any devices that had gained approval using a predicate device that has been shown to be defective. This is our Government for you.
Kim, I wish you well and hope that you will see about getting the mesh removed before it causes you substantial harm.
I really feel for all of us, victims of a corrupt government who seems to be in bed with the Pharmaceutical Giants.

I saw the uroligist today, he did find the third vaginal erosion. Wow, I've been battling this recurrent bacterial infection for a long time, and to know that my sling has worked its way through my vagina, like I have repeatedly!!!!! told my gyno, that I have opened up again, and he pretty much has not done his job by finding this infected area, even if it is way up in my vagina. Is that not his job? I am so angry that I have had to endure a year trying to get him to listen and find out why I have been hurting so. And also, I know in my heart that my miscarraige was directly related to the bacterial infections, and that was caused by the "demon mesh" that for the third time in four years has eaten away my vaginal wall. And I wonder why sex hurts so bad. I have been scheduled to remove the mesh next week. They are not wasting any time and said that I'm lucky that I have not had a more severe infection within my pelvic cavity. I am so very mad!!!!!! Thank goodness I started googling the other night, and for this site.....My doctor wasn't going to tell me. I am very scared.

HI all .
I posted here back in Feb. waiting to go back to see my Gyno. Since then the new TvT I had done has obviously let go as by bladder has dropped, this was never an issue before I had the first TvT. I am in constant discomfort and am wondering if anyone can tell me what are my options before I see my gyno. as they seem to just keep putting me off, I am thinking they just do not know how to fix this problem,I am now almost 20.5 months since my first TvT and still have a constant infection, I recently have had to give up exercise becouse of the strain causing consistant bleeding and cramping. I have had two TvTs now and now will have to return for yet another repair but I am wondering is their a way to remove all these tapes without damaging my bladder?Where do I go from here?

Trish,

Did they not remove the first TVT Sling, before putting the second one in? It is possible to have the device removed without damaging your organs, but I recommend you find a VERY SKILLED Urogynecologist, as my doctors have told me it can be a very delicate and very complicated surgery, and may require multiple surgeries to remove.

I notice you are in Canada, and that concerns me as other friends I have with TVT problems say that there are a very limited doctors, let alone specialists. I feel you would have better luck finding this in the United States, if that is at all a possibility for you.

I also would recommend asking your doctor about using your own biological tissues to make a sling. This is how it was done before this destructive device was launched on the market with virtually no clinical trials.

I wish you the best of luck! Please keep us posted.

Thank You Suzanne for your reply. No they did not remove the first sling as in was imbedded but assured me that they cleaned it up, since that comment was made to me I have been in for yet another clean up as they would put it and here I am worse then before I had the initial surgury.I am in Canada,I have not seen the first surgeon that did the first Tvt since the day of my surgury and the Newest UroGyno. assures me he is doing all he can to figure this out, He has agreed that what ever was done in my first surgury is not common practice as far as he was concerned but it is something that has caused this most recent development with my bladder, they assume the bladder has let go yet again becouse of the infection from the first site and being in my system for so long, my main concern other than getting my bladder finally fixed is more about what if this long term infection I have had for so long now turns to something worse! Thanks for listening!@

I just found this site. I would like to know what the status is regarding the mention of lawsuits against the manufacturers of the mesh. I had a sling, cystocil and rectocil repair with mesh in Nov 06. Recently I have had some complications and pain. It turns out that the mesh pocket is infected and draining causing pain and embarrasment. I am scheduled to have it repaired in June but would like to know what the deal is regarding the legal implications of this product being defective. If someone could give me an update on it I would appreciate it. I was never told it would be an issue for the rest of my life and am frankly pretty pissed off about it. I can now understand why it has been such an issue to get my medical records from the doctor that did the surgery. Needless to say he no longer performs this surgery...he now implants boobs and does lipo.....great....wonder why???

I too am having erosion of the TVT tape. I had surgery Sept. 08 and within 2 weeks was having pain, infection, foul discharge and terrible back pain. My gyne was not concerned, put me on 2 antibiotics and had me come back in 6 weeks. I told him something wasn't right and he told me it was normal following surgery. At the 3 mo. visit he blew me off again so I asked who to go to next and then he did an exam. The tape is outside the vagina. He scheduled an appt with a dr, called and cancelled it the day before, and then sched me with a dr. in another state. I have had 2 appts with him and he is recommending taking out the tape, and doing another complete cystocele and rectocele with mesh. I'm scared to death. I just want it out. My incontinence is worse. I don't know what to do. Please help!

First off let me express how sorry that I am that any of you are going through this nightmare. I stumbled upon this site while googling the TVT procedure.

At my annual visit yesterday my doctor handed me the brocheure & explained that this was the answer to my prayers. He went on to say that it was a 30 minute procedure & that I would be back to normal the next day. No complications were mentioned.

I was strongly considering having this procedure done until I read all of your horror stories. I am so very grateful for you sharing them because you prevented me from going through what you have/are.

I really hope that you all get the care/relief that you need. It's such a shame that women's health issues are not taken seriously. Again I wish you all good health & thank you for changing my mind.
