The controversial issue of failed hip implants including that of Biomet's, may have caused the drop in demand of metal-on-metal hip replacement devices. See http://www.rotlaw.com/biomet/ for related info.

It was confirmed that J&J will stop manufacturing and marketing their recalled hip implant device ASR XL sometime in August 2013. This has been confirmed by a representative of the company through press release. Although personally I think it's a bit late for the company to decide a move like this considering of the thousands DePuy ASR lawsuits that were already filed. The company is now trying to correct through settlements that could've been avoided in the first place if the company has prioritized safety concerns prior this device was released.
