A Modern Parable.

A Japanese company ( Toyota ) and an American company (General Motors) decided to have a canoe race on the Missouri River Both teams practiced long and hard to reach their peak performance before the race.

On the big day, the Japanese won by a mile.

The Americans, very discouraged and depressed, decided to investigate the reason for the crushing defeat. A management team made up of senior management was formed to investigate and recommend appropriate action.

Their conclusion was the Japanese had 8 people rowing and 1 person steering, while the American team had 8 people steering and 1 person rowing.

Feeling a deeper study was in order, American management hired a consulting company and paid them a large amount of money for a second opinion.

They advised, of course, that too many people were steering the boat, while not enough people were rowing.

Not sure of how to utilize that information, but wanting to prevent another loss to the Japanese, the rowing team's management structure was totally reorganized to 4 steering supervisors, 3 area steering superintendents and 1 assistant superintendent steering manager.

They also implemented a new performance system that would give the 1 person rowing the boat greater incentive to work harder. It was called the 'Rowing Team Quality First Program,' with meetings, dinners and free pens for the rower. There was discussion of getting new paddles, canoes and other equipment, extra vacation days for practices and bonuses.

The next year the Japanese won by two miles.

Humiliated, the American management laid off the rower for poor performance, halted development of a new canoe, sold the paddles, and canceled all capital investments for new equipment. The money saved was distributed to the Senior Executives as bonuses and the next year's racing team was out-sourced to India .

Sadly, The End.

Here's something else to think about: Ford has spent the last thirty years moving all its factories out of the US , claiming they can't make money paying American wages.

TOYOTA has spent the last thirty years building more than a dozen plants inside the US . The last quarter's results:

TOYOTA makes 4 billion in profits while Ford racked up 9 billion in losses.

Ford folks are still scratching their heads.

IF THIS WEREN'T SO TRUE IT MIGHT BE FUNNY

Are you sure you know what you are talking about? I'm pretty sure you have no idea and lack reality. Unions have not ruined "America's industry" greed of the companies has. Unions have given a voice to those that had none, they have forced companies to treat employees fairly and with for the most part fair wages & healthcare. Where exactly is the "ruined" part?

Unions have not ruined the auto industry. Come on. Giveme a break. Anyone who buys a Japanese car has ruined the American industry. Ford vechicles are more reliabile and better quality.
As for the Toyota workers, they should unionize to. We should all fight against corporate greed.

Unions are the most corrupt activity in America. They are leeches sucking the blood out of the whole American work force. They have nothing to offer, nothing to sell, nothing to rent, only way to make their big pay checks (and they have them) is on the backs of the worker. I know this to be true cause I was one for years.Union workers are by for the lazy of the lazy (I NEED SSOME ONE TO PROTECT ME BECAUSE I AM LAZY).

unions are driving out jobs, there would be three or four for each of you if you'd just work for $1.00 hr. like the chinese and mexicans.sure, youd only make $16-$18 a day,but your kids and grandparents could work too!. we dont need unions anymore! its an old idea thats time has passed.we need to move into the future! like other countries are/have been.china,india,mexico,ect... they got it going on there!

people buying toyotas are hurting the big three.toyota makes there cars to good, they dont break down much and that puts pressure on ford and toyota to do the same. DONT BUY TOYOTAs. they do still pay full union wages unlike new hires at ford and gm,that only make half now. but hey, that doesnt matter. KEEP BUYING BIG THREE! never mind transmissions going out at 37k miles and ford not covering due to out of warrente buy 1k miles, never mind that stuff, big three LOVES YOU . keep buying them no matter the quality.

The only problem is Toyota is becoming more American every day. The only thing holding them up are the good rowers that are still working.

Unions are crooked, management is crooked. The only helping hand an honest worker has is at the end of his own arm. Sad but true.

I worked at toyota for 11 years and I watched as it got americanized. The rowers as you call them are getting fewer and fewer while there are more supervisors to tell them what they are doing wrong and how to do a job that the supervisor has no idea about. Poor rower pulled a muscle and out the door he goes. That's a great way to run a business. Don't forget all the management they are bringing in from Chevy that are only hired because they was friends with each other before. All you that think you know about unions and toyota have no idea how bad a union is needed in there to stop the new American management from destroying the people that work there.
