Teamsters union challenges IBC reorganization plan

There are 156 comments on the Kansas City Star story from Aug 27, 2007, titled Teamsters union challenges IBC reorganization plan. In it, Kansas City Star reports that:

“Jung comes in and has no experience in the bread or cake business and wants to come out with a system that's never been tested in the industry by any other company, union or nonunion”

The International Brotherhood of Teamsters has told its members that Interstate Bakeries Corp.'s plan to move from bankruptcy to eventual profitability is flawed and unlikely to work.

Richard Volpe, international director of the Teamsters, said in a letter dated Aug. 22 that the company's plan to remake the distribution system was untested and that the union had suggested other ways for the company to save money. The Teamsters union represents 10,000 of the baking company's 25,000 employees. Read more

I hope it does go South because of the union refusal. Union membership has been in decline for nearly two decades. And I know I'll get a flood of "if it weren't for the unions you wouldn't...!!!". Save it. I make my own deals. I earn my pay and earn my raises. I create my own job security by busting my hump and don't need some schlep who has no idea what I do to represent ME and line his pockets while doing nothing but protecting the lazy S.O.B.'s who want guarnteed raises and can't get canned short of an act of Congress. Unions drive up the cost of doing business, health care, and prices of consumer goods. Unions belong in Europe along with the other failed and outdated Socialist, Utopian, Marxist, thought that is evident in Europe's inability to compete in the world marketplace. Bust the unions and let the free market and demand create jobs. Employers will pay out the nose for quality help and only hold their nose when they have to hire union help.
your a idiot ,just because u could make it in a union ! the union gets a better pay for there members so it doesn't go to the higher up's like jung 75000 dollars a month is reasonable think about it buddy the company wants u to work for amost nothing so mangment can play golf ect. ect. So to you dumb ass , you work for a company that is only big back east . here you suck .... so give your 88cent bread away all you want .
We might be only big here....But atleast we have a job we love and don't have bitch about. It is people like you who give people like me and bad rap about piss-poor attitudes. It's all about the benjamins....So get off your high horse and realize who is profitable...We are!

I left IBC last month to work for Bimbo and am very pleased with the Company. I retained same pay, better Med and Dent. same retirement, and best of all they are giving me my sanity back!
I am happy for you, but not all Bimbo locations are Union. Interesting that you can't make it in any other industry, but to work for another union bakery. Take a risk and educate yourself and when you do, you will see what I mean...Unions are a Joke. I used to work in a union and got nothing from it and woke up. I hope you do to, but you do not have the guts.

What is your problem? First of all I don't bitch about my job! Read the post again! I was only saying that I.B.C. and the people who work there are hard working good people and I wished I still worked there . By the way , your company (flowers ) Has been in the same boat as I.B.C check your history. Before you talk . In fact I believe Flowers has been in this same trouble twice. The people (routesales) are the hardest working people there is. I've seen hundreds of people not even able to run or do a route.(work too hard for them) I don't understand why , people are blameing the route people and the union. Wonderbread/Hostess route people work 12 to 15 hours everyday , They do it because they like the business not because they can't work somewhere else. They work without someone looking over them ,I have yet to see a Flowers route person that could even come close to making it at Wonderbread. All I have to say is.You had better hope that Wonderbread pulls this out. There's a lot of real Routeman that will be coming after your job mister big mouth . When Flowers gets a chance at real routeman , I think you may be in trouble and it's back to Walmart for you.....Sorry they don't need people pumping gas anymore, or I'm sure thats what you would be doing ........enough said!!!!!!!!!

Well local bakeries turned downed the concessions, one bakery was 50-10 against, so much for Mr.Jung reaching agreement with them.AS for the above topics, I didnt know we were discussing which was better , we are all trying to do our job and if it wasnt for competition none of us would be working.AS for Unions are a joke..I do have an education but I enjoy what I do and the freedom I have...petal your bull elsewhere.

I might not be smart enough for you with my spelling and grammer but i was smart enough to become a union member and give my family a good life with what i earned . thank you for your thought's , its what i expected from a scab.

A lot of people left the union for BETTER paying jobs, and "peace of mind". I hated giving someone money every month telling me it was for "job security". Think of what you pay them a month, and multiply that by their 1.4 million members. How much of that will you see? You say corporations are rip off artists. Try asking yourself "am I afraid to make it out there on my own?". Unions are for those who can't make their own decisions. By the way, I doubled my salary after leaving the union.

Has anyone heard anymore updates since last Wednesday's court date? I've searched the web and can't find anything. It's too bad that these message boards are turning into a place for ugly debate instead of a place for keeping each other up-to-date as to what is going on. This is scary. There are only 3 weeks left in the month---then what?

Mr. Bread-man, please see the light! Unions are a business within a business. They are leaches that would rather have you lose your job than lose their monthly commission. I feel sorry for all of you and wish you the best of luck, but the outlook is bleak. NBC News is running a report on the impact of foreign companies buying American companies. They do not negotiate well with unions at all. They would rather close the plants than deal with the mooching unions. I work for a German company and they pay employees well with all the fringe benefits without the unions. Each employee's pay is reflective of their work and they all work hard for that salary increase. Guess what, we recently had some union contact come through and the employees said 'Hell NO!! Pay should be based on merit, not seniority. Unions just suffocate organizations to the point of shutting them down.

Unions are parasitic. They feed off their host until that host is either dead or can no longer provide nourishment. They then strike out in search of a new host. Once that new host is found the process begins again and continues. The best way to get rid of a parasite is to innoculate or purge. Purge the parasite and vaccinate so it does not occur later.

You are right , we are spending more time on how unions are and how companys are, this is about peoples lives not who makes more or who doesn't . there are some of us that are in a union and those who are not so why bicker about it and try find a solution not a problem so that 25000 lives can get back to the day to day living. as for me wife of a bread man im sorry.

If IBC was to turn non union and because this is the great USA you have your choice, work for the non union company or go find another union job. Every one always makes the coment on how much Jung makes in dollars and perks. You also had that choice in life he chose his way and you chose your way.

My husband and I have been looking into buying the local Hostess distribution franchise. It consists of 3 routes that deliver the product to stores (such as mini-marts and Wal-marts) and merchandise. It services a 5 county area. We have just started looking into this and it seems to be doing really well and is very profitable. We have just learned about the bankruptcy and I was wondering if anyone knows how this would affect us if we bought it and then they sold out.

... what happens to our stock after they come out of BK. Is it re-issued or is our paper worthless? Is there ANY reason to hold on???
