"My 7-year-old dachshund/cocker spaniel-mix howls when I play the piano." Just because he doesn't how at other noises does not the piano 'playing' isn't hurting his ears or causing distress.
Unless a person is actually in the room, hearing the piano, there is no way to assess what the noise may be doing to the dog. J.S could be striking keys that have just the right-or wrong-pitch to hurt the poor boy's ears. Her playing may be so discordant it cause the dog to howl.
As always, not the dog's fault.
