Miners, textile workers, steel workers, auto workers, who will be next? Instead of blaming each other we should have fought for our jobs. To late now, looks like that imported steel wasn't really the auto comapanies problem after all, was it?

concerned citizen is right...the internet allowed India to take the jobs of about 100 of my former GM friends/coworkers/taxpayers/ca r buyers etc... Who do they think is going to help keep the US economy going? India? Mexico? Thailand? I fear my department will be gone in about 5 years. When you hear that the US is Global, that means jobs going to the cheapest workers outside the US.

Every one you mentioned is a low skilled, highly paid UNION drone.

I hear yah John K but the drones won at the Big 3. I mean the salaried people got played; no overtime and now no health care in retirement.

Name caller!
And you know what, the unions are what drove prices higher than those so called workers could afford. The unions pushed the so called workers right out of door and out of work while they sat back and collected their union dues. The unions protected those so called workers who should have been fired for sitting around and being lazy instead of living up to the so called worker. The unions allowed the fence jumpers on Friday afternoon, when many left early for the race track and the bars. Know your facts before you speak. I grew up in a union home. I heard the stories. My dad was very involved with the union way back then, yet kept his allegience since it also was his 'word'.

Unions had a place and time in history. Those days came and went when they decided to get greedy and feel a sense of 'entitlement' that they kept the pot stirred with. After all, they wouldn't survive without their union dues coming in. I know for a FACT that the automakers for paying anyone who walked in the door $15 / hr just to sweep the floor back in the early-mid 70s. Back then, I'm not sure college grads were making that much. If you're bitter and out of work, maybe you should look in the mirror..sjt

Please allow me to add my two cents. I am a proud Conservative, and I realize that Union leadership pretty much only supports Democrat candidates. That is common knowledge. That being said, I do not blame the Union worker for anything. They are not low skilled, they earn what the company feels they are worth, and they are great Americans. I traded in my Honda Passport for a Chevy Trailblazer so that I could show my support for the American Union worker. I own a financial services company in Cuyahoga Falls (Myers Financial Resources, LLC), and I purchased my business cards from a Union shop. I do not blame the hard working Union empoloyee at all. I blame the Union leadership for guiding their members down the current path that they have decided to take. If we could seperate the politics from the Union leadership, then the entire process would be more effective and efficient. To say that a Union worker is "low skilled and highly paid," is rather disingenuous. I am proud to support Union employees and Union shops- I just wish the Union leadership valued their members more.

If you are on the outside looking in things always look easier. Unions didn’t kill industry in the US. Look at Toyota or Honda they came to the US and offer close to what the big three do. So why can those companies offer good wages and benefits and not suffer? Maybe it’s management not the blue collar workforce.

I just know I had family doing it. My dad worked for Ford in Ohio. I had cousins working for GM in Ohio and Michigan. It was late 70s, I think, and I know what they made until they were laid off...sjt

You are one NASTY person. Everything I said IS the truth and you being a greedy person can't handle the truth. You only wish that I made $5 an hour, you clueless one. You're apparent mentality tells me you have nothing of value to add to a civilized conversation. I am done with you...sjt

San Jose Transplant

I found one pay stub from December 1981. At that time my pay rate was $9.73 an hour. I made more then because I was a jobsetter (department handyman). Machine operator would have made less, assembly line worker would have made less than that and on down to labor cleanup. So those guys would have been making a little under $9.00 at the time. Whoever told you that someone sweeping the floor made $15.00 was pulling your leg.

I kept a few more pay stubs from different years but in the move from Michigan some stuff has got misplaced or lost.

Well, Gordon, you have a pay stub and I do not. Therefore, I have to accept what you say and assume my cousins were bragging and exaggerating as I have no proof. To you, I would apologize if I offended you. I could only go by what I was told and I would have to say it was mid-to-late 70's.

Thank you for your digence in proving the point...sjt

Gordon-

Thanks for the research, but you do not need to defend yourself to SJT, or anyone else. Americans realize and appreciate the hard work that Union employees have contributed over decades.

The Union leadership is made up of the Union workers....go figure what the mindset is from coming up thru the Union ranks?
