General Motors announces newest restructuring plan

General Motors is taking steps to try to turn around its North American operations.

After promises of buyouts and getting people to except lower wages it was all smoke and mirrors!
I can understand a company that needs help but not on the backs of their original workers those 65 and older!
I am not even 60 yet so its not about me. But those 65 and older were made a promise and were there for the company when needed and now that they need healthcare the most its taken away!

I hope the top executives donate their fair share to the G.M. turn around. It seems that the retirees,hourly personnel and lower supervision help to cut cost and increase productivity and give back. In return upper supervision will give themselves a bonus and take all of the credit!

It all goes back to teh unions. They are the cause of all the problems in the steel and auto industry. Also the reason Buffalo will never be a prosperous city.

FOOL I see that it is NOT the UNION people LOSING their jobs / it is about time that G.M. cut their top heave staff and got DOWN to real buss. I have seen for over 30 years where the SUP. B.S.ed alot of stuff and got away with it and if anybody in top mang. would have asked the UNION person on the LINE they would have heard the TRUTH and alot of this would have been done YEARS ago and TOYOTA would NOT even be near what they are today , if MANG> would have listen to the person on the line it would be different { hearing the truth is not easy and people in the MANG ' sector tell their BOSS what THEY want to hear not the TRUTH. I have seen it for over 30 years and that is why the U.S,auto ind is in trouble.

AND FOR THE LAST 15 YEARS the " big 3 " are bending over backwards to do what MR> DEMMING told them they should do over 30 years ago / lets listen to our mang. and not people like DEMMING or even the poor basta-d on the line that knows what is going on , as an old wise man told me along time ago, if your cow is giving you green milk he will have a good idea why, it may not be 100% rite but you can bet he is in the area becouse he KNOWS what is going on and the guy down the line in the DAIRY can only guess , so go to the man at the BOTTOM and you will find out WHAT IS REALLY GOING ON. Thanks to these big auto companies getting our Gov't to have free trade with foriegn companies, the US dollar is less and the prices of everything is higher. If the people of America wake up and send messages to your congress and elected officals to stop all this nightmare., maybe then things could turn back around. These corporations thought free trade would bust the unions and lower our wages. Now they said forget about the people here in the US, we can make it cheaper and forget the health laws and pay other responsibilities that we have faught our our life and our fother's life to get. we are poor, and the corporations are rich.

There's a maxim in business circles that says, "As goes GM, so goes the nation."

It's about time that the American Auto Industry "wake-up to REALITY" The days of "Big bucks and EXCEPTIONAL BENEFITS" are OVER. They'd better LEARN to ADAPT to the times. They'd better learn to produce MUCH BETTER autos at a MUCH MORE reasonable price UTILIZING MEUCH LESS petroleum based products. Their R&D departments were sleeping while the company "raked in" the big bucks. Now they'd BETTER start developing cars that run on electricity or some other form of energy. It wouldn't be nice for us to become LESS DEPENDENT ON FOREIGN OIL, IT's A NECESSITY.

I understand all of the resentment, but GM really does not need to pay for health insurance for those over 65 anymore when they can barely stay afloat in the auto industry. Retirees can go on Medicare like the rest of the county who is over 65 and retired.

The problem I see is twofold. The first problem is that GM had too many platforms. To be honest, they built a product that stinks. No innovation no nothing, just a car. Other than a Corvette....I can't name a GM product that anybody would WANT to be in. It's just a car....nothing more....and not a well built one at that.

Second, I'm not going to blame the Unions. They did what they had to do for their membership. When it comes to problem companies, I follow the Peter Drucker line......it's management, always management. The management at GM stunk up the joint! They were more concerned with this years financials than they were about the long term..five or ten years out. Those agreement with the Union never should have been agreed to. Again, GM enters into stupid nonsense agreements to prevent or limit a strike for the sake of this years analysts expectations on Wall Street. The managers who made these stupid agreements are now gone and the current management (which couldn't manage to get a fever if they were injected with a virus) is left to clean up the mess. Honestly, I don't think they can do it. Daimler-Benz got out of Chrysler. What does that tell you? Dieter Zeich was a top flight manager too. When management superstars can't manage Detroit...

I haven't seen any GM electric vehicles for sale. Seems like with sales so far down they would produce something there is a demand for. Here is a prime opportunity to take over the US electric market and our top 3 together don't have one on the market.
