I work for CGI atm, and have witnessed the "temporary layoffs" first hand. First of all, there have been many more of these since the initial 130.
It is utterly disgusting that CGI would stoop so low as to try to absolve itself of its corporate responsibility of laying off people "whole" in the name of saving it's financial bottomline and saving its share value.
These are difficult times, and this company who receives massive subsidies from the governments is making an already bad economic situation even worse for all those affected by these shinanigans.
Mark my word, there will be many more of these <quote> temporary <unquote> layoffs. And the vast majority will not be rehired. These positions that have been cut are being shipped to GDM (Global Delivery Model) centers in India.
Yeah right these people will be rehired. CGI is playing a nasty game of attrition with its employees.
And at the end of the six months, what will these people receive? They will get the bare minimum the law requires in terms of severance. They will most certainly not receive packages that are on par with those that were offered to employees that were let go last fall or a few years back.
Mark my word!
I sincerely hope there is a silver lining in all this. I hope that with all the BS they are playing now, that when the economy picks up, all those still at CGI remember this well as they all resign and head to other more respectful companies. Furthermore, I hope CGIs reputation is so tarnished that it is unable to recruit decent talent.

9 people from the Insurance division in Markham Ontario with over 100 more from throughout the GTA were put on "temporary" layoff today.

Most were over the age of 50 (70% were actually over 60), yet they still told us all that it was only temporary and that they were going to contact them EVERY WEEK to try and bring them back. 2 were Java certified and CGI is looking for over 100 Java programmers so this doesn't mesh. 1 was a business anaylyst who could work anywhere and they have over 40 BA openings right now so this too doesn't mesh. They are just getting rid of people with decades of experience at CGI who will demand huge severance packages. The Vice President even told us that "of course they can get temporary contracts with other companies and we would never stop them". Of course you won't stop them. That means they've officially quit and you don't have to pay them severance. CGI stands for Canadian jobs Gone to India and these scumbag managers are doing all they can to push the older workers out the door at no cost to the company. Can you spell AGE DISCRIMINATION?
CGI sucks

I confirm everything that was said by the previous person about the recent layoffs.
You can't survive 8 months on EI, it means you have to find a job and quit CGI, so they won't pay severance. If they want you back soon as they say, why layoff period is 35 weeks? Make it 4 weeks, 8 weeks, but not 35 weeks. They throw you on the street not giving you even 2 weeks pay, any "mom and pop" software company will give you that if they fire you.

Get out of CGI quick while you can! Your full time job is to find another job when CGI is paying you. A lot of projects are failing at CGI.

Back in June I was cross training someone and the guy was TLO even before the training is done. Now it is July and I am TLO'ed. On CGI corporate news site, there is a posting -
President Barack Obama commends CGI on creating jobs through its diversified delivery approach. It is different story behind the scene.
