Drowning is the silent killer, 30 seconds, without anyone sensing danger.. 4 years old is too young to be in wave pool for two hours without adult supervision.. condolences.

Definitely NOT the park's fault. Wave pools are incredibly crowded, and even with 6 lifeguards, it's impossible to watch everyone. It's terribly sad that the little boy died, but his mother is to blame. He should have been wearing a life jacket, and mom should have been right there with him.

I have been to 2 different water parks with this kind of wave pool. If there are alot of people and they arent watching out for others, someone can get hurt. It is really aggravating for people to judge this woman who just lost her child and is probably already saying to herself "whatif". It was an accident, and no one, as far as we know, actually kept this kids head under water. Those wave pools can kncok you down and make it hard for you to get up. Good grief, give the woman the benefit of the doubt and let us all learn from this

I don't think it's just the (trained,I hope ?) lifeguards on duty that were to blame in this instance,it's also the parent's responsibility, and I believe it is a shared responsibility, not to blame just the parents,or just the lifeguards,in my opinion, both the (6) lifeguards, and the mother are to blame, please keep this in mind, nothing was said about how many people were in the water,at the time this incident occured, dependant on how many people were in the wave pool,it's kind of hard to keep your eyes on all thoes people,so six lifeguards compared to how many other people?

I must say as a lifeguard our park proably has anywhere from 3-12 rescues a day, with no drownings but out of all those rescues the parents are not present, there are plenty of times im on stand watching my water and come across a young child with a parents back turned or not in the water at all... Lifeguards are there to enfource rules and protect people in the water but, then again whats a parents responsiability to protect there child.... I can honestly say in my zone I have anywhere from 50-60 people at a time half of which our young teens rough housing.. a parent may come with how many children Im certin not nearly close to that. For the lifeguards on duty the day the child drown where was your 10/20?? a life depended on you and you failed the young life as much as the mother did

The loss of a child is devastating, as is the loss of society's acceptance of responsibility. This mom is suffering greatly and is probably very "unforgiving" of herself. My hope here is we will all learn a lesson from this and that there is not a lawsuit filed against anyone. I know many lifeguards and have been to waterparks often. It is not their responsibility to babysit...I truly hope our legal system ignores anything that is filed against the park. We wonder why there is no personal responsibility in our country, because we dont teach it. Our legal system in backlogged with unreasonable lawsuits. I really hope this mom just stays out of court on this.

As the camera "guy" who shot the story with Mark Hedlund this afternoon, I can tell you that both parks we visited (Sun Splash in Roseville and Raging Waters in Sacramento) had ample lifeguards on duty at all times. You may have seen it in a couple of my shots, but the lifeguards are instructed to keep their heads on a swivel -- and the ones around the perimeter of the wave pool are all trained to get to any child in any part of the pool within 30 seconds. Unfortunately, some times freak accidents happen. My condolences go out to the family... but as you've heard from nearly everyone who has commented before me, stay near your kids and always keep your eyes locked on them. Otherwise, keep 'em out of the water!

Thanks for all of your comments... for those of you post, you do make a difference!

I'm sure that there are attorneys already calling her to make a fat paycheck on this case. I hope the jury is made up of the same people who have written the above comments, because she would lose in court. The attorneys always find a loop hole to sue someone, even though it was the mother's fault for not watching her 4 year old. The park should sue her for "mental anguish" that they and their patrons had to witness this senseless drowning!!

I am glad to see that there is a parent out there that realizes it is ultimately their responsibility to be near and watching their child. Not the lifeguard. the purpose of a lifeguard is in case of emergency, not a babysitter.

Benefit of the doubt!! People like you and this lady makes me frustrated; you guys are the type of people that keeps CPS employed; give parents a bad rep... I sure hope you keep your eyes on your kids or nephews, nieces, cousins when you're at pool. Seriously this lady does not deserve any sympathy from me. The only person who deserve it is the little boy who's life was taken so suddenly because of his mother's stupidity. I hope that guilt eats into her enough that she keeps a better eye on her other kids. This all could've been prevented if she kept him in site... in reach...

I don't understand why these amusement parks don't employ some skilled lifeguards to help watch over things. All other waterparks have some certification to keep their areas safe. This place should be just the same.
Lifegaurds can only do so much- It is the resposibility of the parent to watch their small child.--However, I know first hand how easy it is to lose a child at a amusement park/water park- all you can do is keep them next to you- at this time- everyone in that family is suffering- my thoughts and prayers are with the family

Im sure the mother feels horrible, our thoughts and prayers should go out to all who were invovled, its a awful thing that happened, and we are not ones to issue blame, lets all just be reminded as to how special are kids are and how it just takes a moment for them to be taken away, please dont blame the mother, im sure see will blame herself for the rest of her life, lets offer kind words and prayers.

You are 100% responsible for your children until their 18. The problem with the world today is no one is willing to take full responsibility for their actions. If she screwed up by not watching her son, then she needs to say she messed up. Its a tragedy that a four year old had died. Regardless if there are six lifeguards, you're a parent 24 hours a day.

Sandra ~ The park will be advised to settle. It is unlikely this will ever see a jury.
