You can replace the reactor head, but you can't fix the management. The gross mismanagement of this plant by FirstEnergy is obvious. The reactor head is just the tip of a much bigger iceburg. This place need to be permanently shut down before any more 'mishaps' happen. Good bye, and good riddance.

You know that the failure with the nuclear reactor core and the correspondent reactor head had to be VERY serious if the Fed's shut it down in February.

Any failure of this cap will result in the same type of catastrophy as Chernobyl.

That is an old boiling water moderated reactor design at Davis-Besse whereas the Chernobyl reactor was the Graphite moderated reactor but aside from the initial cooling design, any failure of the reactor lid or reactor head will produce the same devistating environmental results.

First Energy better postpone the dividen checks to their shareholders in order to save up money for the proper upgrades, repairs and maintenance if they plan to run this old fashioned Ford Model-T of a reactor in the future.

AND here I thought you were just a gun-slinging cowboy that rode in on a horse!

I am kidding of course. Great info.:~)
I DO support carry and conceal!!!!
But being a BEE, it's hard to conceal.LOL

I campaigned for an Ohio group and petitioned to make them to be more responsible with the site. At the time erosion was taking place on the reactor! This is a serious matter and one which most people don't know about.
Let's hope that Chernobyl was a one time disaster in the world.

The real long term solution is replacement but Nukes are NOT cheap and the amount of red tape, if you can even do it in this Solicalist Democratic Administration is almost impossible.

I just can't help thinking how different (and for the better) this Country would have been if Sheeple would not have voted for Hope & Change.

McCain wanted NEW nuclear technology and clean energy alternatives but the Bleeding Heart Liberal Media wanted to fundamentally change the freedoms and liberties of the United States by promoting an unproven leader and his Progressive Party-Thinking.

And just like Chernobyl, it's now too late...the damage is done and there's no going back.

Remember: November is CLOSE by. VOTE the Socialist Democratic PIGS out of office.

I believe First Energy as much as I believe in The Tooth Fairy, Santa, The Easter Bunny, and The Great Pumpkin! These First Energy people could make great fiction writers. Hope they sleep well at night.(All sarcasm intended) How can you tell when a First Energy employee is lying? Their lips are moving!

Hopefully, 2017 will arrive without further mishap at Davis-Besse, and that accident waiting to happen will be shut down, permanently. The 40-year operating license will be up then.

Based on the track record of Davis-Besse and the 'state of the ark' technology inside, it would be a serious mistake for the NRC to grant a license extension for another 20 years.

I'm definitely not against safe, reliable commercial nuclear power production in the United States. However, the drive for corporate profits has created a real mess in the FirstEnergy nuclear fleet, reaching to the Perry Nuclear Power Plant and Beaver Valley in Western Pennsylvania.

The plant engineers who are assigned the systems propose design upgrades and maintenance practices that will make the plants more safe and more reliable, and the plant design review committes (made up of plant managers) generally shoot them down.

Unless it's a knee jerk reaction to a Condition Report, a Licensee Event Report, or a NRC finding, these have about as much chance of getting implemented as a snowball surviving in the desert. It's definitely a frustrating experience - wait for something to go wrong, then propose the fix. Oh, by the way, this is the same fix proposed earlier, BEFORE it became a real problem !!!

Unfortunately, until you remove the corporate pencil necks and the good ol' boy management network from the operation and maintenance of these plants, profit will ALWAYS override safety.

Excellent analysis "Former Nuke."

Profitability ALWAYS outweighs Safety or at least, doing the right thing.

Let Subject-Matter Experts called nuclear engineers make the decisions regarding design changes and maintenance schedules and as you said, remove the corporate pencil necks and the good ol' boy management network from the operation and maintenance of these plants.

The problem is endemic in virtually every facet of industry and occupation: corporate pencil necks and the good ol' boy management network.

You can be sure that the Ohio Citizen's Action group is involved with this one. A few years back I wrote letters to First Energy CEO about how incompetent his co was letting the crack in the reactor go for so long. They are watchdogs for this injustice and others that deal with the safety of Ohio people.
