NEC: Leak means other problems

The discovery of a leak of tritiated water at Vermont Yankee is just one more sign that Entergy has mismanaged the nuclear power plant in Vernon, said Ray Shadis, technical consultant for the New England Coalition on Nuclear Pollution. Full Story

Yep, we are not components in a isolated system. We are all one big dynamic system like it or not...the so called insiders and outsiders. Poke it over there and it sticks out here.

Fact one,‘King Coal’ kills over 25,000 Americans a year due to particulate pollution alone.-US EPA.

I would like to ask all the anti nukes who were against Vermont Yankees licenses renewal just how many Americans do they think they will be responsible for killing after Yankee closes down? There is no way the anti nukes can shirk their impending responsibility for the eventual death of hundreds if not thousands of American citizens. Fact two, once Vermont Yankee closes the Northeastern United States will rely more on ‘King Coal’ to produce its electricity.

With the closure of Vermont Yankee it will be impossible to reach the zero emission carbon levels that we need to achieve in the Northeast. In fact due to alternative energies expense and unreliability it is in all likelihood we will not be able to reach the low carbon levels that the Northeast currently achieves when Yankee is in operation. Yes the statuesque will change with the closure of Vermont Yankee. Unfortunately come the fall equinox of 2012 it will change for the worse.

Once again I ask the planet killing anti nukes to come out and take responsibility for future deaths that will be caused due to the closer of Vermont Yankee.

I would laugh about the insanity of it all if I were not already crying,

In the case of the transformer fire, he said, "The warning had been out there about the degradation of that particular item for 10 or 12 years prior, but Entergy ... decided to ignore it," despite the increased demand of a power uprate granted in 2003. Quote from Ray

Entergy bought the plant in 2002. The previous owner ignored the issue for ten years then, didn't they Ray. Also, the power uprate didn't get approved until late 2005 or early 2006. There was a plan aready in place to replace the transformer before the uprate.

I hope Entergy closes a year early, and VT has no power purchase agreements in place and they have to buy off the spot market. How does going from paying $ 0.09 a kw to 0.22 to 0.60 a kw gonna feel like. I have a feeling a lot of VT'ers will be walking around looking like they just finished their first week in prision.

Sounds like a plan. VT'ers can get a taste for the future a year early.

You mean a gas powered generator? How much did people spend on gas during the last storm at ~2.75 a gallon when they lost power?

Look, I'm not saying what's happening at the plant right now isn't worrisome, it is, and I work there. Believe it or not, safety is our first concern. It's not Entergy's fault that the original owners did a second rate job building the pipe chase where the leak is.

When you bought you house, assuming it was already there, did you dig up the piping to the well or septic tank. I doubt it.

I think Ray and Paul...NEC did a great job.
